Nice little spot in the woods

Went during the week. Only 1 other group was across the lake. Lots of spots to space out even if it was crowded. Easy hike in, could have used a wagon for extra stuff.

A Beautiful Retreat

This place was great. The lake was clear and whether or not it was a good idea, we swam in it as did all our dogs. Great temperature water. The trees were nice to get lost in and the nature sounds at night were pleasant. It was pretty hot and humid for most of it. Nights got a little chilly by 4-5 am The map to get there is straightforward, just use Google to drive to the gate then walk down the access road. The turn to the lake is a little hidden but nothing that you can't find. My party hiked in way to much stuff, but it was more fun for it. We probably walked the trail about 20 times a piece to get everything in and out during our 3 night stay. The one thing that disappointed me was there were some other people here while we stayed and though they were respectful with noise, they did leave trash. It's not the only campsite that trash was left at either. Hopefully those coming here can show a little more respect in the future. We did end up using a chair and fire grate that was left behind and hiked it out with us though. Silver linings I guess. Overall a great experience.

Great little hike in spot

Just pull up to the gate, park at the side and it’s about a 1.3 mile hike to the lake. DON’T forget to turn right when it’s time, the trail is a little overgrown where you turn so keep that in mind. Plenty of spots around the lake. I went camping on a Monday and was the only one. Saw an otter and a little snake. Heard a lot more than that at night, entire forest seemed to be alive, with coyotes howling, something snorting, footsteps all over the place, a donkey making noise, the air being pushed by flying birds, etc. So wildlife seems pretty active around there. Didn’t hear many fish jump in the lake though. Lake looks suitable for swimming and felt okay to me when I got in to the waist, just a little chilly is all. Plenty of room around the lake for people to put up tents or whatever. I’d imagine it gets busy on the weekend but who knows, sure is a nice little camping spot, highly recommended.

Beautiful little gem of a campsite

Accessed by a 1-2 mile hike down some old Forrest service roads... Out in the middle of Sam Houston National Forrest this spot is truly a hidden gem. Terrific site to bring a small boyscout or Trail life troop. Fishing in the lake, hiking on Lonestar Trail. Many good locations to pitch a tent. Quiet, secluded, we will seek this spot out again soon!
