State Park: Where the Buffalo Roam
We were able to find an opening for 1 night at the honey flat campground, and enjoyed the solitude, scenery and wild life. Had 30 Amp hookup with water. Dumpstation and bath facilities. The sites were good size with fire rings and shaded picnic tables. Need to be aware of texas wild life. Many hiking trails and staff at the information center were nice and helpful. Need to plan trip far in advance as sites fill up quick if you plan on staying for awhile.
Very scenic, with Buffalo herds.
Recommend reservations if you want a electric hookup! Sites are are spaced so you can hardly see neighbors. Buffalo walk right thru the camping sites.

Better than Big Bend and Palo Duro Canyon
I think that Caprock Canyons State Park is underrated, which is great for the people who visit. We'll definitely be back.
The campground is well maintained and easy to navigate. The views aren't as spectacular as they are at campgrounds in Palo Duro Canyon but BISON COME TO VISIT. Of course, to stay safe this often requires an exercise of patience. We were caught behind a heard of 12 or so on a hiking trail and maintaining a safe distance required a very leisurely pace, with lots of time to just take in the landscape. And we had to stand around and wait for another group to graze their way past our trailer on another occasion. But it was easy to keep our distance and they don't stay in one place long, so you just have to give them a few minutes. It was really neat to see these creatures roaming free--I thought it was a lot more exciting than seeing the herds in Yellowstone because there aren't the crowds of tourists.

Fair campground, good park
We’ve stayed at Honey Flats a couple of times over the past year and it’s worth a stop if you’re in the area and have never been. The Buffalo herd and prairie dog town are big hits with the kids and there’s good hiking trails in the canyon. Cell service is basically non-existent for both Verizon and AT&T. Honey Flats is a basic state park campground with power and water and pretty decent spacing between sites. If you visit in late Spring, the weather in this part of the state can get dicey in a hurry, we experienced several hail storms and wild thunderstorms in the few days we’ve spent at the park in the month of May.

Amazing Buffalo herd
This is another fun close place for us on Weekends. This park has a huge buffalo herd that roams the park year round. Lots of other wild life & the trails are well maintained. Limit RV hookups but are well maintained & clean. Staff is very nice & helpful.

My Second Favorite State Park In Texas!!
This is a beautiful, undervalued State Park In Texas. I spent only one night here on my way to another TX State Park. It was fantastic!! This park has great facilities, spacious campsites and talk about animals. Bison & Prarie Dogs are the tow most popular animals at the park. Very unique to any park that I have visited in TX. The canyon views are spectacular as is the hiking in the park. I'm a photographer and got some beautiful Sunset and Sunrise photos. The park personnel were great and very helpful in pointing out some of he best photo opportunities in the park.

Buffalo’s!
Stunning park.
Quiet place with Bison roaming the campground!
What a neat place!! The staff is great! The Rangers are friendly and helpful! The sites are pretty darn level and well spaced apart.(there might be an occasional Bison dropping in the way, but hey, I can deal with that!!) It is very clean and well maintained. It is well out of town, very peaceful. Night time, with no moon, star gazing and satellite tracking is terrific! Come see it for yourself and have fun!

Views are stunning
Woke to bison wandering through our campsite. It was really amazing site.
Highs and lows
Highs include beautiful views, great wildlife, shelters over the tables, big sites, and quiet environment. Lows include heavy wind, heat, and mainly no water due to a boil water notice that meant no showers and overall safety concern.
Beautiful canyon
My family stayed in the Caprock Canyon state park Honey Flats loop. Stunning views of the canyon are within a short walk from the campground. The paved pad at our site was level, and there was also a sheltered picnic table at the site. All sites were very spacious and felt private. A herd of bison along with their calves wandered through our campsite in the morning. We also spotted tons of prairie dogs, a coyote, a road runner, and rabbits. The playground was just okay, and the showers were unavailable when we visited due to plumbing problems, but the hiking and mountain biking trails along with the wildlife made it one of the best campgrounds we’ve stayed at.
Beautiful Canyon and Camp, decent facilities
A nice park with lots of camp sites. RV hook ups, and lots of dispersed camps around the pack. Some are hike or horse in sites.
Nestled in a beautiful canyon with tons of trials for hiking or horseback.
Park also has a small lake, Lake Theo, which holds some really nice fish.
The herd of Buffalo roam the park, and will visit your camp in the early mornings!
The scenery is beautiful, with the canyon and the wildlife, but of all the state parks I've visited so far, this ranks the lowest based on facilities, and staff.
Showers were closed when we arrived, and we only found out by being met with locked door on our first morning. No notice when booking our reservations.
Bathroom doors were open, and there was a ton of insects all over the place. The bathroom was in need of some minor repairs, and could have used a good cleaning.
The camp was maintained tho, and overall we had a good trip. I had higher expectations from a Texas State Park, but oh well. The park itself is beautiful, so Ill still visit based on that alone.

Do not tent camp here. They mislead you and then fine you $200
Do not tent camp here. They will mislead you and then give you a huge fine!!! When we booked the campsite as a fun activity for our pandemic fatigued 6-year old granddaughter, they told me our car would be close to our campsite. We get there at 4 on a Friday afternoon in November and we were the only people in sight! When we booked, they told us to go into the park and find our tent site by ourselves because park personnel were avoiding interacting due to Covid. We got to our sight and found the gate locked to the whole area. It was clear people had driven around the gate several times. Thinking they had forgotten their sole campers for the night and had not come and unlocked the gate, we drove around it. We were very concerned about having to put up the tent in the dark, which was descending upon us. We went down a road to our campsite. While we were unloading, a state police officer came and gave us a$200 fine for going around the gate. It was devastating and disappointing. We wanted our granddaughter to have some fun during all the pandemic restrictions. We were treated horribly.
Great time
Spent 3 days here. Loved every minute of it. Beautiful landscape.
Nice State Park Campground
Honey Flat is located within Caprock Canyon State Park about one hour south of Amarillo Texas. The park has great facilities and it’s own heard of bison. The canyon is at the end of the Honey Flat Campground. Although smaller than Palo Duro Canyon it’s a beautiful red canyon photo op. The park also has popular well stocked fishing lake. Honey Flat Campground can host guests from tent camper to large 5th wheels and RVs. Depending on the location each site has some degree of privacy along with electrical and water hookups. They also have picnic tables with shelter, fire rings, and poles to hang shower bags and camp gear. They have a nearby dump station as well. The restrooms are located just north of the campgrounds along with a great playground for the kids. Homely flats is usually crowded on weekends especially during the fall and spring. I would recommend making a reservation a few months in advance. The park staff are very friendly and efficient. We like to stop over at Caprock during our trips up to Colorado and the Utah.

Beautiful scenery
This is a really great campground. I would have given it 5 stars but the dump station is out of order and has been for a long time. The sites are very spacious. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. The trails are well kept and plentiful for walking, bikes, horses. The lake is nice as well. And don’t forget the bison freely wandering through the campground. And the canyon views are so beautiful

Love the Bison
We stayed here on the way to Colorado. It’s about a one day drive for us from Austin Texas. The park exceeded our expectations for experience and amenities. We arrived at 7pm and the ranger station and visitors center was still open. They have a small gift shop and your can also rent items including fishing rods for the well stocked fishing lake. The views of the red canyons are worth the visit. The morning sun light on the canyon is incredible. The hidden surprise is the huge herd of bison. They congregate around the main entrance at sundown and you can get very close in your car for some great shots. The site was perfect for our sprinter van with privacy between the sites, water, and electric. We don’t need water or electric but find these larger sites provide some space and privacy. The sites have picnic tables, sun shades, and hooks for hanging clothes lines or drying out tents. We visited in July and the outdoor temp was 94 degrees at 9 pm. So you need to plan your visit if you are tent camping or you can ac is limited. They have great facilities including RV dump station and clean restrooms with showers. Lots of folks travel to Palo Duro which is just up the road but Caprock has a lot to offer. We plan to come back in the Fall to do some hiking and camping. Another good Texas State Park. The town of Turkey Texas is close. This looks like an interesting stop with cafes and a nice theater.

Hidden gem
Caprock is a smaller version of palo duro canyon, and very close, without all the “commercial” fanfare. We tent camped here in august, 2018 and had the entire tent campsite lakeside to ourselves. The bathrooms were great, clean, hot water, all good things. The hikes were nice, challenging only due to heat (it was August in Texas so to be expected). There is a nice pier overlooking the lake, we were able to set up our chairs and enjoy a beautiful peaceful evening. The staff was very helpful. This is a Bison ranch, but we didnt see any during our two night stay.
Great park for a biking, day hike, picnic, or camping!
A hidden gem, this park was a real treat! Stop by the visitor's center, there you will pay your entrance fee/camping fees and pick up a map.
Caprock State Park has a sandwich shop, playground, camp sites, bathrooms, look out points and lots of trailheads. Each campsite has a fire pit and plenty of space to spread out and make yourself at home. This is a wonderful place for hiking, camping, primitive camping, r.v. stays, landscape and wildlife photography. Bring water, it does get very hot during the day!
We took the Upper Canyon Trail to Fern Cave and then made our way back on the Canyon Loop Trail. It was a perfect day hike with lots of beautiful views. While the map labels portions of it as extremely rugged and steep, none of it requires technical experience and it is all very well marked. Fern Cave took a little bit of intuitive navigating to get to, as its off the beaten path, but it’s well worth it. I’m an experienced hiker and had a blast.
mini canyon of the Grand Canyon
great place to hike, lots of bison and prairie dogs to see and great view while hiking. just be careful on the hikes some rocks are unstable and narrow walk ways.

A Piece of Texas Heaven
- Burn Ban in Effect - No firewood or charcoal - Only Propane
- Night sky is awesome
- If you are expecting shade…forget it
- Bison roam free and they are bigger than you
- Horse flies are everywhere and according to my wife they do like gray leggings
- Watch out for critters, large and small
- Watch where you step..land mines (Bison poop is everywhere)
- Fishing at Lake Theo - No license needed
- Really nice park store
- Ranger led Bat Tours in the summer
We went with some friends who also pulled their camper. We picked Sites #22 and #24 because they were connected and the kids could roam between the two sites. The park has a lot of wildlife…in addition to the Bison and the Prairie Dogs we saw Road Runners, Jack Rabbits, Horned Lizards. If you are a first time visitor going hiking in the summer, plan and heed the warnings of the park rangers. The park has very limited cell service (AT&T works better than Verizon) and canyon floor is much warmer than up top. We hiked early in the mornings and the kids were awed by the red rock and the quartz. After sunset it is very comfortable outside and the night sky will leave you breathless. Quitaque is the closest town 3 miles away and has a gas station. Amarillo is a hour away and we went for a day trip taking TX 207 N through Mackenzie Lake. It is a scenic drive. We stopped at the Cadillac Ranch, had lunch at Tyler's BBQ and made a trip to Palo Duro Canyon State Park to watch "TEXAS". Next time we pull a camper, I will definitely carry a tent and go primitive for a couple of nights. Also, take a telescope if you own one. You won't regret it.

Bison to Prairie Dogs!
Caprock Canyons provides an excellent opportunity to see Bison wandering about pretty freely! There are also plenty of prairie dogs to keep you amused. I love the way each campsite is shielded from the others by space and natural trees and scrub.
We only stayed one night, but we are so glad we did! Beautiful canyons, many opportunities to climb, bike and swim.
Great place!
We loved this place! Great sites, nice bathrooms, gorgeous park! A real gem in West Texas.
Spectacular Scenery
Caprock Canyon is definitely off the beaten path but a wonderful place to get away.
The park is large but there is only one camping loop for RVs. The facilities are older but the park staff does a good job maintaining the sites. Water and electric but no sewer available.
The park has challenging mountain biking and hiking. The only negative is most of the trails are not easily accessible from the Honey Flat campground (without a long walk) so having a car to navigate the large park is helpful.
Lake Theo is a nice bonus for swimming or kayaking/canoeing in the hot summer.
The bison are the stars of the park. You'll see them on your way in and probably visiting Honey Flat in the evening.
One of our favorite things to do is walk to the vista near the Honey Flat campground at sunset and enjoy the magnificent scenery.
Make sure to bring what you need to the park. There is not much in Quitaque so bring your supplies.
Awesome location
The honey flat campground is the closest to the restrooms. The bison roam free throughout the whole park
Go immediately if you love Texas
Caprock Canyons not only looks like it fell out of a John Wayne classic but is also home to the Texas State Bison Herd! The Bison roam free throughout the park so keep an eye out for them when you’re exploring. There are also prairie dogs everywhere! Enjoy them! They’re funny and cool. You can hike around or into the canyon and both are AWESOME! The sites were good sizes and most had shade in the RV loop. One of the cleanest bathrooms I’ve used in a state park was here as well! There is plenty of history within the park as well as ranger programs and wildlife. Seriously worth the drIve!

Fantastic
We preferred the less modern camping areas to the ones that have water and electric available. The more primitive sites were more isolated and offered better views of the park. There are toilets available at all campgrounds except for the hike in sites. Each camp site offers a type of shading, tables, and fire pits. This area is subject to burn bans early in the camping season that generally last through the summer and into the fall. Dogs are welcome and are permitted to access the trails. There is a wild bison herd within the park boundaries, you can also view prairie dogs. Hiking and mountain biking are available, although I believe the trails are more appropriate for hiking and trail running rather than MTB. Not far from the park is an old rails to trails trail which allows for some interesting features. The local town is very small and does not offer much for shopping, try to have everything you need before getting into the area because it is very isolated.
