## Overview

Little Oak Campground has closed for the 2021 season. Big Oak and Hemlock loops will open on 4/4/22, and Lone Pine and Poplar loops will open on 4/25/22. Little Oak Campground hugs the shores and inlets of beautiful South Holston Lake in Sullivan County, Tennessee. With a view of the Holston Mountain ridgeline and lake islands, Little Oak campsites are a relaxing setting for your vacation. There are 69 universally accessible campsites improved in 2012 including warm showers and a paved access road. Campground hosts are available on site to answer your questions. 

## Recreation

Fishing is a popular activity for campers at Little Oak, with a concrete boat launch within the campground. Numerous campsites have easy access to the lake shore for tying off your boat. There are nearby trails for hiking and horseback riding. Children and adults enjoy riding their bikes on the roads between camping loops. There is also a lakeside grassy area popular for swimming and picnicking. There is an array of wildflowers to enjoy throughout the season, resident deer and turkey and other natural wonders for the naturalist in your group.

## Facilities

There are 69 universally accessible campsites for tents or RVs within four loops at Little Oak Campground. Each loop has a pair of vault toilets. In addition, there is an accessible shower house with 8 showers for the campground. There is a boat launch within the campground with an additional single vault toilet.

## Natural Features

South Holston Lake is a 7,580-acre hydroelectric reservoir managed by the Tennessee Valley Authority and surrounded by the Cherokee National Forest. Holston Mountain and nearby Iron Mountain provide habitat for an array of wildlife including a healthy population of black bear.

Little Oak Campground is within 30 minutes of Bristol, Tennessee, and nearby Bristol Motor Speedway. Backbone Rock Recreation Area is approximately 30 minutes away up beautiful Shadey Valley, and just five minutes past Backbone Rock is Damascus, Virginia. Jacobs Creek Campground and Swim Area is 25 minutes away for another view of South Holston Lake.

Little Oak Campground

Located along the scenic Blue Ridge Parkway in the lush green expanses of North Carolina, the Julian Price Campground is a top destination for boating, hiking, fishing and more. Whether its for a family camping excursion or a peaceful getaway, this campground has something for everyone. Natural Features: Julian Price Campground is adjacent to Price Lake, a pristine body of water that sparkles against the backdrop of rolling Carolina hills. The surrounding forest offers hemlock, white pine, oak, hickory and birch trees, along with a colorful assortment of wildflowers in the spring and an array of vivid orange and red foliage displays in autumn. The Blue Ridge Parkway is a scenic byway that follows the high crests of the central and southern Appalachians for 469 miles from Shenandoah National Park in Virginia to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in North Carolina. Recreation: Canoe rentals are available at Price Lake, and other types of non-motorized boats are permitted. Fishing is also available at the lake, with a dock provided. Price Lake Trail offers a refreshing hike around the edge of the water, and the Boone Fork, Green Knob and Tanawha Trails are just a few of the trails that are conveniently accessed through the campground. Wildlife viewing is also popular as campers have a good chance of spotting bears, grouse, turkeys, owls, hawks and more. Facilities: Julian Price Campground combines the traditional great outdoors experience with the modern conveniences of flush toilets and drinking water. Both RV and tent sites are available and provided picnic areas are perfect for barbecues or late-night marshmallow roasting. Nearby Attractions: Blowing Rock, North Carolina, located just 20 minutes away on the Blue Ridge Parkway, offers fine dining, shopping and more.

Julian Price Park Campground

[View of Watauga Lake in Cherokee National Forests](http://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_MEDIA/stelprdb5274081.jpg) Water recreation is abundant in this area, featuring Watauga Lake; the Doe, Elk and Watauga rivers; several streams and seven waterfalls. Highly developed recreation areas along Watauga Lake provide facilities for fishing, picnicking, swimming and boat launching. The Appalachian National Scenic Trail runs through the area's backcountry. Camp on the lakeshore at Cardens Bluff or in the backcountry along Laurel Fork Creek at Dennis Cove. Friendship Rd

The campground has 10 single campsites, including two double sites within Backbone Rock Campground. The campground has flush toilets. Each site contains a table, fire ring and lantern holder. The pavilions at Backbone Rock Recreation Area are popular locations for family reunions, weddings and other types of group gatherings. The two pavilions are in distinctly separate areas. Pavilion #1 is larger and adjacent to a large field, Beaverdam Creek and large parking area. Pavilion #2 is in a more secluded setting down old stone steps and along Beaverdam Creek. Natural Features: Backbone Rock Recreation Area is located along Beaverdam Creek in northern Johnson County. Backbone Rock gets its name from a spur ridge on Holston Mountain that ends abruptly at a bend in Beaverdam Creek. A tunnel was drilled through the rock in 1901 to allow railroad access between Shady Valley and Damascus, VA. Motorists pass through what is locally known as "The shortest tunnel in the world" as they travel along TN 133. Recreation: There is a trail that will take you to the top of Backbone Rock, following a stone-step wooded path. The trail crosses the rock and leads to Beaverdam Creek or Backbone Rock Falls. The Appalachian National Scenic Trail adjoins Backbone Rock Trail. Beaverdam Creek is known for its excellent fishing. Facilities: There is a CCC-era pavilion at each site with picnic tables and grills. The larger pavilion, Pavilion #1, includes a stone fireplace and four large picnic tables with additional tables and grills nearby. Vault toilets are located within the parking area. Pavilion #2 also has an original stone fireplace, four tables and nearby grills and additional tables. Parking and a vault toilet are located across the street from the picnic area. Nearby Attractions: Damascus, Virginia is five miles north of Backbone Rock for any in-town needs.

R&D Campground

## Overview

Stony Fork, tucked in a dense forest setting, is located at the foot of Big Walker Mountain beside the Big Walker Mountain Scenic Byway. The East Fork of Stony Fork Creek winds through the campground, providing a serene setting for trout fishing and water play for visitors at the welcoming campground.   
  
The 1 mile Stony Fork Nature Trail takes campers through groves of pine and hardwoods, and the campground loop road makes for a scenic walk, too. 

## Recreation

The Big Walker Mountain Scenic Byway is an incredible drive for viewing blooms of rhododendron, azalea and mountain laurel in spring, and fiery red and gold foliage in fall. Scenic overlooks highlight views of Mount Rogers and many ridges and valleys. A horseshoe pit at the campground provides hours of fun for families. Experienced hikers love the Seven Sisters Trail, approximately 5 miles, which leads from the campground to the top of Little Walker Mountain, then onto the Scenic Byway.

## Facilities

Volunteer hosts are on hand to answer questions and make campers feel welcome. Campsites are ideal for both RV and tent camping. Warm showers and flush toilets are available, plus parking aprons are paved. Most sites come with electric hookups. 

## Natural Features

Stony Fork sits in a valley of the Appalachians at a 2,400 foot elevation. Its creekside setting provides a peaceful soundtrack of running water. In springtime, wildflowers and rhododendron dot the region with spectacular colors, and fall is reliably scenic with its red and yellow foliage. 

## Nearby Attractions

Within 10 miles of the campground, hike the popular Appalachian Trail, which extends more than 2,175 miles throughout the Appalachian Mountains across 14 states. It is the first trail designated as a National Scenic Trail. There is an outdoor shooting range a few miles from the campground.

Stony Fork Campground

Elk Knob State Park has backcountry campsites. It is a pleasant hike down into a cove forest with beautiful streams. 

There are:
3 individual sites that can accommodate no more than six people and two tents each.

2 group sites that can accommodate up to 26 people and is for organized groups.

A zone camping area that can accommodate three sites of no more than six people and two tents each.

These are primitive sites with no facilities except one pit toilet to be shared by the two group sites. 

The sites are approximately a one- to two-mile hike from the trailhead. 

All supplies, including water, must be packed to the sites. To drink water from nearby creeks and streams, use a filtration device or boil the water for at least 5 minutes. Camp fires are not allowed. Cooking by camp stove is permitted.

Reservations are required for the group sites while the other sites are on a first-come, first-served basis. Please contact the park office for more information.

## Overview

Relax at this popular, yet peaceful recreation area beside Beartree Lake complete with campsites, a picnic area, nearby trails and a scenic lake. Campsites are popular with tent campers since there are no hookups, but RVs are welcome and easily accommodated. Group sites are available with reservations.

## Recreation

The campground offers two fishing piers, and smallmouth bass, sunfish, rainbow and brown trout are all possible catches.  
  
  
The Beartree Lake Trail, which circles the lake, is excellent for hiking. Half of the trail is paved for an easier walk.   
 

## Facilities

Tent and RV campers are welcome. Drinking water and a water fill-up station are provided. A dump station is located on the left side of the road before the contact station as you enter the campground. Each site has a grill and picnic table, and most are secluded from other sites. The group picnic shelter accommodates 50 guests and most group sites fit 24 guests. (Group sites are closed for the 2021 season.)

The campground is located in diverse vegetation, and Beartree Lake is surrounded by dense trees that meet the shoreline.   
  
The Mount Rogers Scenic Byway passes near the campground, highlighting the impressive valleys, mountains, forests and rural countrysides of western Virginia.
