      FS 289 Pull Off

      Solitude

Several peaceful spots. Recommend high clearance and awd/4x4 in some areas. A tree was down by the stream when I had arrived after a bad storm so I could not cross it. Decided to follow the trail up the hill. The road was pretty gnarly, It was late and I could not turn around. But once I made it to the top I found an awesome spot to set up.

      FS 289 Pull Off

      Tranquil but out there!

Great spots out by a creek but be prepared to lose cell service driving through the park

      FS 289 Pull Off

      The perfect spot for isolation

This was just what I needed. It was far from everyone and perfect for an overnight. I’ll be uploading a video to my YouTube channel for anyone who might be interested. The channel is called “73 Trips Around the Sun.”

      FS 289 Pull Off

      Nice and secluded

Great area back in the woods. There are multiple pull off options to camp but this one is right next to the water. Loved it here!

Jellico Creek Rd Dispersed Site 3

      Jellico Creek #3

Using the coordinates from the dispersed site #1 post, we found our way down the road and settled on the third site. Not huge, but right next to the creek. Went to sleep to the sound of coyotes and woke up to turkeys gobbling, and saw otters in the creek over breakfast. Someone had left a bunch of trash when we showed up, bottles, cardboard, cigarette boxes, etc but we picked it up and made the most of it. Not a bunch of places to use the bathroom but just do your best. Minimal traffic down the road. Saw one car pass while we were at our site? The drive in is beautiful in the fall. There is a point where Jellico Creek Rd continues straight, and also peels off to the right, it’s really weird. But take the option to the right down across the small bridge.

Palmers Junction Dispersed Camping - PERMANENTLY CLOSED

      CLOSED.

I rode all the way over here from Greeneville to check out the area in order to bring a group of friends camping next weekend.

BUT the entire campground is closed. When I pulled up to the iron gate and saw the sign, it read "CLOSED TO THE PUBLIC DUE TO VANDALISM AND UNAUTHORIZED ACTIVITY"

Palmers Junction Dispersed Camping - PERMANENTLY CLOSED

      Closed to Public

I drove over an hour to get here to find that it is “closed to public for vandalism”. I was very upset by this but obviously nothing I could do. Just wish I knew how to check before driving all the way. But the drive! Woah! So beautiful, I wish there was a way I could find out when it opens back up because I was very much looking forward to camping here.

      FS 289 Pull Off

      Good location

Another review recommended an off-road vehicle or a jeep to get here. In dry conditions, I got here just fine in an Outback Wilderness, and 5 minutes later a Prius drove up. There’s a bit of trash but I’ve seen worse. Definitely bring bug repellent. The creek is only a few feet away from the campsite.

    Tips for camping with families

Site selection: When camping with children, choose sites with natural features that provide built-in entertainment. The swimming hole at Jellico Creek makes it particularly suitable for families with older children who can swim.

    Tips from RVers

Size limitations: Most dispersed camping areas near Rutledge accommodate smaller rigs only. Standard RVs should avoid these sites as they generally lack turnaround space and have narrow access roads.

Road condition awareness: Forest service roads deteriorate seasonally. Even sites listed as RV-accessible may require high clearance after heavy rains or during spring thaw conditions. Small trailers and truck campers generally fare better than larger recreational vehicles.

Leveling challenges: Bring extra leveling blocks as most free camping sites near Rutledge have uneven surfaces. Small travel trailers under 20 feet have the best chance of finding suitable positioning at sites like Jellico Creek Road Dispersed #1.
