Solitude and Seclusion

A short rough road takes you a few hundred yards of the main gravel road to the top of a ridge. Nice views , but also seclusion due to junipers. Not trailer or RV friendly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is dispersed camping allowed on Steens Mountain?

Dispersed camping at Steens Mountain is primarily allowed along the Loop Road in designated pull-off areas. The specific dispersed site on Steens Mountain Loop Road is located a few hundred yards off the main gravel road, situated atop a ridge that offers nice views while providing seclusion thanks to surrounding juniper trees. The area requires a short but rough access road to reach the camping spots. Always camp in previously used sites to minimize environmental impact and follow Leave No Trace principles while enjoying this beautiful mountain area.

What are the regulations for dispersed camping at Steens Mountain?

When dispersed camping at Steens Mountain, you must camp only in established sites that show previous use. Stay at least 200 feet from water sources and main roads. Pack out all trash and waste, following Leave No Trace principles. Campfires may be restricted seasonally, so bring a portable stove for cooking. Most dispersed sites have a 14-day stay limit. No permits are required for basic dispersed camping, but group sizes may be limited. For the most current regulations, check with the Burns BLM office before your trip, as rules can change seasonally based on conditions.

Is the Steens Mountain Loop Road accessible for RVs and trailers?

The Steens Mountain Loop Road dispersed camping areas are not suitable for RVs or trailers. The access road is short but rough, requiring high-clearance vehicles to navigate safely. The dispersed sites are specifically situated several hundred yards off the main gravel road via challenging terrain that isn't trailer-friendly. For RV camping near Steens Mountain, consider developed campgrounds in the area like Page Springs or Fish Lake campgrounds, which offer more accessible options with appropriate facilities for larger vehicles.
