The Alvord Desert playa stretches across a dry lakebed where campers can pitch tents directly on the hardpacked clay surface. This Bureau of Land Management site operates as dispersed camping on a vast, flat expanse with no designated sites or boundaries. Campers drive onto the desert floor itself and set up wherever they choose, creating a camping experience unlike traditional campgrounds.

The silence here strikes visitors immediately. Raphaela H. notes that "other than cars racing across the desert, it is eerily quiet." The lack of trees, buildings, or terrain features means sound carries differently across the open space. At night, the absence of light pollution reveals stars with unusual clarity, though wind can pick up after dark and challenge lightweight tents.

Access requires driving 30 miles on gravel roads, with two main entry points available. The Frog Spring entrance offers rougher conditions, while Alvord Hot Springs provides a smoother approach for a fee. Campers report the road surface varies significantly based on recent weather and maintenance. A pit toilet sits near Frog Springs, but the playa itself has no facilities whatsoever.

Weather conditions determine whether camping is possible at all. Rain turns the clay into sticky mud that can trap vehicles for days until it dries completely. "Even a slight rain can make the playa muddy and create a flash-flood," explains Raphaela H.. Summer brings intense heat with no shade, while fall and spring offer more moderate temperatures. Campers must bring all water, pack out all waste, and cannot build fires on the desert surface.

For a completely different experience with established sites and amenities, Pike Creek Primitive Camp at Alvord Hot Springs provides a more conventional camping option nearby.

A magical place

I can't begin to describe the beauty of this place.  A dry lakebed desert with the Steens Mountain rising thousands of feet straight up from it, where the peaks were still capped with snow.  I drove from the Frog Springs public entrance 2.5 miles in which put me only halfway across.  The illusions are wild.  I did a run and also a bunch of fun ebiking and when you get away from your vehicle far enough you can both lose sight of it, and also still see it from miles away.  The heat mirage is super cool as well.

I went alone and have never been in such silence.  No people around.  There was one or two other campers in the whole thing and they were miles away. No bird sounds or tree sounds or signs of life through sound. Wild.

I went in April which is risky because you don't go out there if it rains.  Everything was dry and no rain in the forecast.  On one of my bike rides I went up to the hot springs area and it was still wet up there and yes, the mud stopped my bike in its tracks.

This place is stunning, but the road in is a 30 mile Dusty gravel road so make sure you vehicle is well sealed. We loved the sunset, star gazing and sunrises.

Amazing Experience in SE Oregon!

What a great experience to camp on the playa of the Alvord Desert! So unique and interesting, and the star-gazing is amazing!

As others have mentioned, be very careful about the weather.  In my case, it rained in another part of the desert and because it is so flat, the water actually blew much closer to my camping location than I thought possible. I didn't get stuck in it, but it is something to consider.

I entered at Frog Spring and had no problem with a 4x4 and trailer made for off-road travel.  Might be worth walking the short road first if you're in a sedan or have a regular travel trailer to make sure you're good to go.  If it's not good, everyone told me that entering through Alvord Hot Springs is a little smoother option.

Fields, OR was a great place to stop for a milkshake and to get the latest on conditions out there.  Planning to do it again sometime!

DUST! But will do it again!

We camped 3 nights with a group, with our hot air balloons.  But a great time!  Flew balloons and a drone, road ATV's, watched a plane fly in and flip over on landing (a bunch tipped it back over and off he flew) and, OH, the stars!

Hot in the summer, beware of the mud after a rainstorm, but otherwise an amazing experience!

Beautiful but beware of sand storms.

Choose tent wisely. A late night sandstorm came through and ripped our rainfly and tent was covered in sand. Had to sleep in car. I should have brought the smaller backpack tent. Beautiful place though. One night was enough.

Desert dreaming under the stars

To truly feel the awe of this place it is best done driving out onto the lake bed and sleeping in the wild. You need to bring everything you’ll need. And very important: tag or mark your spot with gps if planning time leave playa to come back. The desert plays tricks on your eyes. The stunning steens mountain range and quiet are unmatched. Hot springs and good hikes and milkshakes nearby. Treat yourself

A Must See

This place is unbelievable! The pictures and descriptions can not fully explain the feeling of the Alvord Desert Playa. You should know you have to drive very far on dirt roads to get there. They are a little rough but not terrible. You will want to go slow. I recommend entering through the Alvord Hot Springs. They do charge but their entrance is much better than the Frog Spring entrance, which is very rough and not well maintained. The staff at the Alvord Hot Springs is also very knowledgeable on the area. You cannot have fires on the playa and there is no water so plan accordingly. Also the closest gas station is in Fields and the gas is very expensive. If you are thinking about going here just go. We had a camper van so we were not concerned about the elements. Do your research before you go and it will be an experience you will never forget. I can't wait to go back!

Bowl of Stars

Probably the coolest place in Oregon to chill with a shortage of people, quietude, endless stars and a hot spring! You can camp virtually anywhere on the playa. The most popular area is near Frog Springs, where there is a pit toilet. Alvord Hot Springs is about two miles north of Frog Springs. It's pay-to-soak, but it's worth it. To the west the Steens loom, welcoming the setting sun. What I have found alluring about Alvord is the night, its stars, its quiet, its relentless darkness. I've never seen stars so clear. Fall is the best time to visit, but anytime is good if you ask me. Be prepared with lots of water, pack your garbage out and do your best to leave little trace so others after you might share a similar experience.

Incredibly beautiful spot, dispersed camping at its finest

Visiting the Alvord Desert Campground is a must in Eastern Oregon.  If you book a campsite, you have private access to drive out on the desert playa, and that also includes access to the hot springs.  Well worth it.  The stars out there are incredible.  Be sure to check the weather before heading out on the playa, because if it has been raining it will be incredibly muddy and very easy to get your car stuck in.

Freedom

Super duper dispersed camping. Small fee it think was $8 to go through the Alvord hot spring road to enter. Insane stars/moon views!!

Just come here and see

The whole Alvord desert is a dry lake bed.... well most often it is dry, but if it isn’t do not even try to drive out there. The clay silt will stop an cat in its tracks. Tow company won’t even get you until it is dry...

That being said, it is completely open for dispersed camping. You could get to the middle of it and feel like you are stranded.

Total. Solitude.

We came in the summer and the bed was dry. So naturally we drove 70 mph to a spot we seems “fine”.. it’s all just dry dirt, so pick a place that is far from anyone else.

Walking around you could almost loose sight of your car, with the heat illusion ok the horizon. Super trippy, but honestly at night we nearly walked right past our car.

No light pollution, so stars are on full display, but it does get windy at night.

Be safe here, lots of people driving wicked fast.

Otherworldly camping experience

When the weather is dry, you can camp on the Alvord Desert. There are no facilities - no water, no trash, no toilets, no shade, no cell-service - so plan accordingly and plan well. Even a slight rain can make the playa muddy and create a flash-flood, so watch the weather carefully. Pack everything out, including planning on bringing a portable toilet.

This flat, stretching desert far from any city (or even town) provides unparalleled star-gazing. Other than cars racing across the desert, it is eerily quiet. There are some bugs.

The sun sets behind the Steens, and sunrises across the playa are beautiful. This remote adventure is worth a trip; it's a camping experience unlike any other. It gets hot during the day, so bring a shelter and plan some time to get off the desert for a break from the sun.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the Alvord Desert hot springs like for campers?

The Alvord Hot Springs are located about two miles north of Frog Springs on the edge of the playa. They offer a welcome respite for campers, especially during cooler desert nights. Some campsite bookings include private access to both the hot springs and permission to drive onto the desert playa. The springs provide a relaxing soak with stunning views of the surrounding desert landscape. This natural feature adds a unique element to the camping experience, allowing visitors to enjoy thermal waters in an otherwise harsh environment.

Where can you camp in Alvord Desert, Oregon?

The Alvord Desert offers dispersed camping across the entire dry lake bed playa. You can drive onto the playa and camp virtually anywhere when conditions are dry. Popular spots include the area near Frog Springs, which has a pit toilet. Some visitors access the desert through Alvord Hot Springs, which charges a small fee (around $8) for entry. There are no designated sites or facilities on the playa itself - no water, trash service, toilets, shade, or cell service - so you must come fully prepared with everything you need. The playa is accessed via approximately 30 miles of dusty gravel roads, so ensure your vehicle is suitable for these conditions.

What weather conditions should campers expect in the Alvord Desert?

The Alvord Desert experiences extreme and rapidly changing weather conditions. Summers can be intensely hot with little to no shade available. Sandstorms can occur suddenly, potentially damaging camping equipment - a sturdier tent is recommended. Most critically, visitors must monitor weather forecasts vigilantly as even slight rain can make the playa muddy and potentially create flash floods. When the playa becomes wet, vehicles can become hopelessly stuck, and tow companies won't attempt recovery until conditions dry out. The desert can also get cold at night, particularly in non-summer months, so pack for temperature variations.

Is the Alvord Desert good for stargazing when camping?

The Alvord Desert offers exceptional stargazing opportunities and is considered one of the premier locations in Oregon for night sky viewing. With minimal light pollution, extremely remote location, and the flat, open expanse of the playa providing unobstructed 360-degree views, the night skies are spectacular. Campers frequently report incredible visibility of stars, planets, and the Milky Way. The clear desert air and elevation enhance the viewing experience. Many visitors specifically camp here for the stargazing, describing the night sky as "endless" with "stunning stars" that create an awe-inspiring experience unlike anywhere else.
