Cole Mt Ridge

SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

A gravel road climbs Cole Mountain in the Coast Range near Tolovana Park, Oregon, leading to a dispersed camping area with no fees, no hookups, and no formal infrastructure. The road is described by recent visitors as well-maintained, and the multiple pulloffs along the route mean options are available even on summer weekends. No water, restrooms, or electricity are on-site. Campfires are permitted.

The site sits near the ridgeline, where the treeline opens enough to give westward views toward the mountains. "Lovely mountain views and we were able to share it with other campers," notes Paulina Z. Reviewers mention a fire pit area and chopped logs on-site, with room for two to four vehicles depending on the specific pulloff chosen. Trailer and RV access may be possible on portions of the road, though this varies by spot.

Navigation deserves attention before arrival. The GPS coordinates reported by multiple visitors do not lead directly to the camping area. The actual site sits to the left of the main road, up a short uphill dirt track. Litter has been noted at some pulloffs, and as of mid-2026, one reviewer reported a gate blocking road access, with signage citing litter complaints as the reason for closure. Conditions may change. Campers with flexibility might also consider Dispersed Camping Near Cannon Beach or East Summit Rd dispersed as nearby alternatives on the same ridge system.

Gate blocking access road

Attempted to access this location June 2026 but was unable to due to a gate blocking the road. The signage suggests the area is closed due to previous complaints of litter :(

Good spot

The coordinates did not take us to the exact spot, but the pin on the map was the closest, it’s actually to the left on the dirt road. You’ll see a tiny dirt road going up hill and that’s the spot. Had some trees that had been chopped down and a fire pit area. Definitely could fit a couple cars up in that area. We arrived around 7pm and stayed the night. It’s about 25 minutes from Cannon Beach. The view of the mountains was nice!

Cole mtn dispersed

Road is gravel, pretty well maintained. There’s a lot of pull off roads, not sure if you can go down all of them. I saw lots of sites available on a Thursday in August.

Lots of trash at the spot I picked thrown over the side of the mtn. Besides that, it is very secluded and quiet, and 25 minutes from cannon beach.

Could possibly pull trailers or rvs on most of it

Off grid site with beautiful views!

Great spot up the mountain on a gravel road. This spot has an almost 180 degree view around to the west! Could fit about 2-4 people comfortably. No amenities but such a good time!

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is Cole Mountain Ridge camping located and how do I access it?

Cole Mountain Ridge camping is located on a mountainside offering spectacular western views. Access is via a gravel road that's relatively well-maintained, though a bit rugged in spots. The campground sits about 25 minutes from the main road. Some GPS coordinates may not be exact, so look for a small dirt road going uphill on the left when you're on the main dirt road. Multiple pull-off areas are available along the route where you can find camping spots. Four-wheel drive isn't strictly necessary but could be helpful, especially during wet conditions.

What amenities and facilities are available at Cole Mountain Ridge camping?

Cole Mountain Ridge camping is a primitive site with no formal amenities or facilities. There are no restrooms, running water, trash services, or electricity. You'll find basic fire pits at some sites, and there's enough space to fit 2-4 people comfortably at most spots. The main attraction is the nearly 180-degree panoramic mountain views. Pack in all supplies you'll need and be prepared to pack out all trash, as previous visitors have unfortunately left litter in some areas.

What hiking trails and outdoor activities can I enjoy near Cole Mountain Ridge?

While specific trail names aren't marked, Cole Mountain Ridge offers excellent opportunities for scenic hiking with stunning mountain vistas. The area's elevation provides panoramic views that are perfect for photography, especially at sunset. Stargazing is exceptional due to minimal light pollution. Wildlife watching, bird spotting, and nature observation are popular activities. The secluded mountain setting also makes it ideal for those seeking quiet contemplation or meditation in nature. Bring appropriate footwear for exploring the surrounding terrain.

Are permits required for camping at Cole Mountain Ridge?

No formal permits appear to be required for camping at Cole Mountain Ridge. It operates as a dispersed camping area with multiple pull-off sites available on a first-come, first-served basis. This is particularly true on weekdays, with more availability noted during weekday visits even in peak August season. However, it's always advisable to check with the local forest service or land management agency before your trip, as regulations for dispersed camping can change. Always practice Leave No Trace principles when camping here.
