Walnut Falls Escape operates as a walk-in campground in forested terrain near Lesage, requiring campers to hike their gear to sites. The property sits alongside a creek with some open areas mixed among the trees, though access roads present rough conditions that may challenge some vehicles.
Sites range from $59-89 per night and include picnic tables with campfire rings, while firewood is available for purchase. Pets are welcome throughout the grounds. The hike-in format means campers should pack light and prepare for carrying equipment from parking areas. For those preferring drive-up access, Timbre Ridge Lake offers a different setup 8 miles north.
Description
Our name, "Walnut Falls Escape," was inspired by the abundance of black walnut trees that grace the property. The word "Falls" highlights the stunning 30 foot waterfall nestled within the landscape. Finally, "Escape" reflects the opportunity to leave behind the busyness of everyday life and immerse yourself in the serenity and peacefulness that define Walnut Falls Escape.
Other things to note
This cabin has been a labor of love—a multi-year project built with the help of close friends. While I’ve enjoyed it a few times a year, I’ve decided it’s time to open it up for others to experience. To me, this place represents serenity, peace, and a chance to relax and reflect. It’s truly my little slice of paradise, and I can’t wait to share it with you. The cabin features an open floor plan that sleeps 4-5 guests. On the first floor, you’ll find a comfortable queen-size bed, and upstairs, accessible via a ladder, there’s a full-size bed and a twin bunk bed set. For those feeling adventurous, a catwalk leads to an additional space perfect for sleeping bags, an air mattress, or just relaxing and playing chess. Please note that accessing the second floor requires physical ability to climb the ladder. The cabin runs on solar power, which is designed to handle lights and a TV but not high-energy devices like hair dryers or toasters. It’s heated by a cozy wood stove, with propane powering the kitchen’s stovetop. While there is a toilet, flushing requires pouring a gallon of water into the bowl to flush into the septic system. Please note: there is no running water—yet! (It’s a goal we’re working on.) The cabin combines rustic charm with modern touches, featuring a stunning tongue-and-groove pine ceiling, a brand-new couch, and a reclining chair. But the real treasure of this property is the 63 wooded acres that surround it. I’ve spent years carving out trails that wind through hills, low-flowing creeks (depending on the weather), and scenic valleys. For the serious adventurer, there’s a black diamond-level hike that starts behind the cabin. Follow the trail through the creek and up a tall, steep hill to be rewarded with breathtaking views stretching across hundreds of acres, all the way to West Virginia and the Ohio River. After a day of exploring, unwind at the large firepit, complete with wraparound bench seating. Nearby, you’ll find a campsite charcoal grill and a vertical smoker to cook up a delicious meal. The cabin comes equipped with all necessary cookware and disposable utensils for your convenience. Parking is at the main gate, approximately 1/2 mile from the cabin. A 4x4 vehicle is recommended if you plan to drive down.
