White water rafting, lake access, and mountain hiking all sit within a short drive of Turkey Creek Campground, a privately owned property in Almond, North Carolina, set in a valley within the Nantahala National Forest south of the Smokies. A ¾-mile trail leads directly from the campground to Fontana Lake, and the Nantahala National Forest Tsali Recreational Area is just a few miles north, giving hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians easy access to well-maintained trail systems. The Nantahala Outdoor Center is less than 15 minutes away for paddlers and rafters. A small creek runs through the property itself, and several sites sit directly alongside it.
Sites are spread across 10 acres and include tent pads built from leveled crushed gravel, designed to stay dry during rain. Each site has an in-ground rock firepit and a wooden picnic table. Reviewers consistently single out sites 18, 22, 8, and 9 as worth requesting. The bathhouses, located beneath the main clubhouse, draw repeated attention for cleanliness, with rain showerheads and hot water. Cell service is limited for AT&T and Verizon users; downloading offline maps before arrival is a practical precaution. The campground's WiFi provides a workable alternative from most sites.
The entrance is a steep gravel hill. It has been handled by standard 2WD vehicles, but arriving before dark is worth planning for. RVs are limited to 30 feet, and while water and electric hookups are available at most sites, sewer hookups are not at individual sites; a dump station is available on the way out. Amanda Y. notes the Fontana Lake trail "can be marshy or underwater in spots, so wear hiking boots or waders," particularly in early spring when water levels vary.
The campground runs from March 15 through November 1 and books up quickly, especially around major summer holidays. Reservations are available online and the check-in process is contactless. Firewood runs $5 per bundle, ice is $3 per bag, and coffee is available in the clubhouse office. Tsali Campground is another nearby option for those who need a fallback or want to compare setups in the area. Turkey Creek works best for tent campers and smaller RVs who want creek-side sites, direct trail access to Fontana Lake, and well-maintained facilities in a remote mountain setting.
