Free, hike-in camping on an Appalachian bald, Siler Bald sits within Nantahala National Forest and has no fees, no reservations, and no facilities beyond what the landscape provides. Getting here requires hiking up to the summit, so plan accordingly with gear and water before you set out.
The defining feature is the open, treeless summit itself. No tree cover means 360-degree sightlines across the surrounding ridgelines, and it also means exposure to wind and temperature drops after dark. Several tent sites exist along the trail on the way up, but the summit offers the most open ground and includes a firepit. Campfires are allowed, and pets are welcome. The Siler Bald Trail Shelter TR 373 sits roughly 0.4 miles northeast along the trail for those who prefer a covered option.
Water is the critical planning factor here. There is no reliable water source at or near the summit, so carrying enough for the full trip is essential. As one reviewer put it, "there is really no water so fill up before you leave." Temperatures at elevation can drop sharply at night even in warmer months, making layers a practical necessity rather than an afterthought.
Siler Bald makes the most sense for backpackers and hikers who want an above-treeline overnight with open sky and minimal company, and who come fully self-sufficient.
Description

Directions
Siler Bald is north of Franklin, North Carolina off Wayah Road. You can find a gravel parking lot just after the AT trail crossing (parking lot located on the left). Some lower-to-the-ground vehicles may not clear the steep hill into the lot, so park on the roadside. The trailhead is to the left of the parking lot and leads up to the white blazes on the AT. Parking is free, and there are picnic tables just beyond the parking lot. Unfortunately, no bathroom facilities.
