Luzerne Campground stands out as the only equestrian-focused camping option near Hillsdale, New York, providing campsites with stalls specifically designed for horses. The campground features bridle paths and accommodates both tent and RV camping in a wooded setting along Lake Luzerne. Most riders secure sites closest to the lake for convenient water access for their animals. The private beach area prohibits motorboats, creating a safer environment for horses and riders. Campers note that the deep woods setting offers ample shade for horses during summer heat while the small country store across from the entrance stocks emergency supplies for both campers and their equine companions.

The Hudson River area trails connect to Luzerne Campground, offering varied terrain for day rides ranging from beginner-friendly paths to more challenging routes. Horse owners appreciate the campground's proximity to Lake George Village while maintaining a quieter, more horse-appropriate environment. The campground operates seasonally from May 19 to September 10, making summer the prime season for equestrian camping in this region. Trailer parking is available at designated sites with enough clearance for larger rigs. The shower facilities receive consistent praise for cleanliness and privacy, an important consideration after long days of riding. Reservations are recommended, especially for horse-specific sites which are limited and typically book well in advance during peak season.

Nice campground near Killington, VT. Water and dump station. Not for big rigs we have a 21 ft TT. Things were tight but doable. One of the few Vermont state campgrounds that is still open. Most close from second Monday in October until Memorial Day.

Highway Adjacent But Good Hiking Access

When camping in VT it is usually our goal to hike, rest, cook, and relax at camp. We live in a busy/loud city so we really love a rural spot where we can just unplug and enjoy nature. Gifford Woods has great access to the AT and the Long Trail, nice bathrooms, and kind staff... but campers beware- it is wedged between two major highways. Initially we pulled up to the site "Poplar" after driving 4+ hours and I could have cried, this site faces a large DOT/Parks Dept. parking lot with a huge building and trucks everywhere. Luckily the (very sweet) staff said they understood that this was an issue and that they do get lots of complaints about that site. They moved us to T02 which was dramatically better. Unfortunately, you can still hear trucks/car honking/ambulances from that site and I assume all other sites. I understand now that people camp here just for AT access, but I would probably not go back due to the sheer volume of the neighboring highways and quieter camping options nearby.

      So clean!

We stayed in site 33 which is in the equestrian camping area. It’s really open with little tree cover which is perfect for those who work remote using Starlink. We had fantastic connection. The sites in the equestrian camping area are huge and so clean. The bathrooms are the cleanest I’ve seen so far and we do this full time. The only disappointment was that the hot water doesn’t get very hot in the shower so you better do some jumping jacks to get pumped before showering during colder temps! The trails are well marked and well maintained. Overall, this is a fantastic campsite. There’s even a brewery a ten minute walk down the road. We didn’t go but looks nice. Get your supplies before you arrive! Not many places around to quickly grab charcoal if you need it.

Theres a nature center with all kinds of information and activities. A large playground. Volleyball and horseshoe pits. Definitely will be returning! Also, bathrooms were always clean and well maintained. Park staff very friendly!

      Moreau Lake State Park Campground

      One of the NIcest Parks

I love the spacious campsites. It’s very woodsy between sites, so it seems very private. Bathrooms and Showers are clean. Over 20 miles in hiking trails, this is one of the nicest parks, I’ve visited.

      Frontier Town Campground

      Best rustic camping in Adarondacks

Stayed twice - first time at site 59 with a 28' travel trailer and second time at 56 with a tent. This is a great home base to explore from the Lake George region to Ticonderoga to day hikes or cycling. Both times the bathrooms and showers were immaculate. The staff does a fantastic job of maintenance. This is an old-growth forest area to a site on the west side of the road gives best Morning sun - sites 57 and 59 are good examples.

      Frontier Town Campground

New, very nice, with killer bugs

I was in site 43, it was long enough it could have fit two of the biggest RVs I have ever seen. My 75 foot starling cable did not even reach all the way back out to the road. I drove through the equestrian loop and found it very confusing. Lots of fences and shared pedestals. I stayed in the next loop, stagecoach. Everything looked spic and span like it had just opened last month. The young man at the check in station said there were very few people there except on the weekends. I only saw three or four other rVs and two of them had to camp right next to me. I saw the bugs, some of them clearly mosquitoes and I never saw one get away with biting me. But I ended up with two lower legs and two forearms that constantly itch like mad. I will never go back in June.

    Guide to Hillsdale

Luzerne Campground in Lake Luzerne, New York offers the only horse camping facilities in the region that accommodate trail riders with their horses. The campground features specially designed sites where horses can be stabled in adjacent stalls while campers set up nearby. Both tent and RV camping options are available for equestrians, with sites that provide enough space for horse trailers. The campground maintains clean facilities with showers and bathrooms, though there is no drinking water available directly at campsites. Electric hookups are provided for RV campers, along with water hookups and sanitary dump stations. The campground particularly stands out for accommodating back riders with dedicated stalls for horses at select campsites.

Riders can access several bridle trails directly from the campground, making it convenient to explore the surrounding woodland without trailering horses to a separate location. Located approximately 60 miles north of Hillsdale, Luzerne offers a central location for exploring trails throughout the southern Adirondack region. The swimming beach and boat rentals provide additional recreation options after trail riding. Reservations are recommended, especially during the peak season which runs from mid-May through early September. The campground's proximity to a small country store across from the entrance proves convenient for picking up last-minute supplies or forgotten items. The older facilities are well-maintained and the lake provides good fishing opportunities for those who want to combine equestrian activities with other outdoor pursuits.
