Lake Dennison Recreation Area encompasses this state-managed campground in Winchendon, where two distinct loops offer different camping experiences along the shores of a 118-acre lake. The facility operates from late May through early September, with sites ranging from $17 to $35 per night depending on hookup availability and residency status.
The campground's layout creates notably different atmospheres between its sections. The first loop near the entrance provides more privacy among wooded sites, though those closest to the main road experience traffic noise from logging trucks. Rachael K. notes that "sites 1 through 5 on the first loop are pretty quiet," with site 4 offering particular seclusion and "a little trail from our site that went down to a marsh." The second loop farther from the entrance features numerous lakeside sites but significantly less privacy, with higher-numbered sites positioned close together.
Lake access varies by location within the campground. Sites on the north loop allow direct canoe and kayak launches, while the east loop requires walking to designated beach areas. The lake supports fishing for bass, stocked trout, chain pickerel, and panfish near shore. Two small beaches provide swimming access, with the larger beach located in the day-use area.
Facilities show their age in some areas. Bathrooms in the north loop require renovation, while east loop facilities maintain better condition. Cell coverage remains spotty, with Jean C. reporting "nearly nonexistent" Verizon service and recommending downloading offline maps. The campground accommodates RVs up to 30 feet with electric, water, and sewer hookups available at select sites.
For different camping experiences, Otter River State Forest lies 1.6 miles south with more rustic options.
