Tonopah, NV Dispersed Camping

Highway noise from US-95 carries across this hilltop dispersed camping area located just outside Tonopah. Campers access the site via a gravel road across from the gas station, with three route options leading uphill to scattered camping spots on BLM land.

The elevated position provides expansive views across Nevada's high desert mountain ranges, particularly during sunset hours. Lyf Uninterrupted notes campers "park up on a hill that overlooks a vast mountain range." Cell coverage remains strong with both Verizon and AT&T reporting good signal strength. The area accommodates RVs up to 50 feet, though reviewers recommend taking the middle access road to avoid a problematic dip on the right-hand route.

Wind frequently sweeps across the exposed terrain. Joshua trees dot the landscape nearby, and the fenced Stargazing Park provides a reference point for navigation and a secure area for pets. Most visitors use the location for overnight stops while traveling through central Nevada, though some stay longer to explore the region. Town amenities remain close, with gas stations and basic services less than two miles away.

Campers seeking more remote options can explore Gemfield Road Dispersed — BLM Tonopah for additional dispersed sites further from highway traffic.

Campers regularly cited the free, level sites with stunning mountain views and peaceful atmosphere. No amenities provided, so visitors need to come prepared. Some highway noise noted but most found the location convenient to town.

Tonopah stargazing park

We parked next to the Stargazing Park which is surrounded by a cyclone fence, perfect for our dog. There was one other rig here but they parked far away and up the hill. Warning, pay attention to the speed zones, we were pulled over by the sheriff coming into town, he said we were doing 50 in a 35 zone but in actually we were slowing down, so slow down before you hit the speed zone signs.

Scenic and quiet

The entry to this spot is not across from the Texaco. If you enter Tonopah from the south it is on the right, immediately after passing the 76 station. Look for the Stargazing Park sign. Then drive on up to the fenced park or to th hilltop just beyond.

Perfect spot for the night

Only stayed one night but it was great. Gravel road off of the highway so you can hear the vehicles pass. There’s a gas station across the street and just a mile or so from town and stores. Very peaceful and plenty of space for everyone. Was able to feel privacy while having neighbors. Beautiful sunsets!! No amenities so come prepared! Great AT&T and was able to work remotely just fine.

Vast views in the wind

We enjoyed this easy to find space for an overnight stop, thanks to previous review. Definitely take the middle road choice when starting out at the BLM office. Stop at the crest of the hill. It goes downhill from there with no turn around for a big trailer and is softer sand. We did arrive in the heat, kept screened windows open through the night, and awoke to a sand filled living space and cooler temps. Verizon service has 4 bars. A couple of quads rode past in the evening, and another overnighter stopped in next to us for the night.

Level Camping on a Hill Overlooking Vast Mountain Range

FREE and easy to get in and out.  Plus it was level.  This dispersed area is right off the 95 highway right as you come in to town or leave it based on the direction of travel.  You park up on a hill that overlooks a vast mountain range.  The scenery is just gorgeous and the sunsets are beautiful.  We were the only ones parked on the hill most of the time but a few overnighters did stop in.  We stayed on the hill for a week.  It's close to the town of Tonopah which is quaint and includes all the amenities you need.  We dumped our trash at the local Texaco station dumpster.

You enter this location right before the BLM office.  Entry road is across from the Texaco station.  There are three paths, take the middle or the left.  The one on the right has a large dip you'll want to avoid.
