Westshore Camping Area

SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Fishing and lakeside camping drive most visits to Westshore Camping Area, a dispersed site within Sutherland Reservoir State Recreation Area in Sutherland, Nebraska. Getting here takes some navigation: from the south entrance, follow the road left all the way back along a long packed-dirt perimeter road until the dispersed sites open up. All sites sit next to the reservoir. A narrow sand beach lies within short walking distance, and anglers can access the water directly, though fishing regulations by zone are worth confirming before casting.

Crowd levels tend to stay low. Multiple visitors arriving at different times, including one after midnight, found only two or three other groups in the area. Some sites have picnic tables and fire rings; others do not, so checking your spot before settling in saves time. Electric hookups are available, and the area accommodates big rigs. Cell service is listed as available, which helps for last-minute planning.

The one consistent drawback is mosquitoes. As Katie B. notes, there is "a pretty significant amount of mosquitos from all the standing water." This is especially relevant in summer months. Two vault toilets are on-site. Nightly rates run $10 for primitive sites, with additional fees for out-of-state plates. The nearby Inlet Camping Area and Outlet Camping Area provide alternatives within the same recreation area if Westshore fills up. Bring strong insect repellent regardless of season.

Mosquito Central

We pulled in after midnight and left at 7 am. Great spacious area, we didn’t have to level out, and looked really pretty. However, a pretty significant amount of mosquitos from all the standing water. Only saw two other campers.

Westshore Camping Area,

Arrived about 7p and plenty site choices. Dispersed sites are in back area of reservoir (down long packed dirt road around perimeter of reservoir) short distance away from sites is water and with narrow sand beach. Nice for those fishing although not sure if fishing is restricted to certain areas. Only saw a few other sites occupied. Saw two vault toilets although didn't use --we have our own toilet. Cost was $14 for out of state plates, plus $10 for primitive site. Only "negative" is mosquitoes hence 3 stars but what can one expect so close to water?

Nice for a stop over

You access the westside by entering the south camping site and following the road to you left all the way back. There are tables and rings at some sites but not all. There is a vault toilet at the end of the ring. All sites are next to the lake.
