Free dispersed camping at Strawberry Hill sits roughly 8 miles east of campgrounds near Miles City, accessed via a rough dirt road that drops steeply into the area. Campers consistently flag that AWD or 4WD is close to mandatory, particularly beyond the first site or two. The road ends about a mile in, where turning around becomes necessary. There are no designated sites, no fire rings, and no picnic tables along the route, though at least one informal fire ring has been noted just past the gate.
The first couple of spots off the road are the most accessible and carry a noticeable slope. Smaller rigs fare best here. Reviewers in vans, pickup campers, and short trailers have made it in without trouble, while anything longer than 25 feet is not advised. One camper arrived with a two-door Jeep and a 12-foot trailer and managed the entry without issue. Broken glass has been reported at some sites, so it is worth checking the ground before setting up camp.
Noise is minimal. A highway runs nearby but sees little traffic, and the surrounding grassland and open terrain give the area a wide-open feel under dark skies. Bryan notes the stargazing is "top tier." Wind overnight is possible, as at least one reviewer reported gusty conditions. A walking trail starts from the main parking lot for those who want to explore on foot. Campers wanting hookups or developed facilities nearby can check out Big Sky Campground & RV Park, about a mile to the southeast.
