Quiet and Well Kept!

It is a quarter mile drive down a well managed dirt road to arrive to the site. There are ~10 camp sites. The campground does not have river access, but there are a couple sites at the fishing access point. The grass was cut and the vault toilet was in good condition.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where are the best river camping spots in Western Montana?

Far West on the Yellowstone River offers approximately 10 campsites located a quarter mile down a well-maintained dirt road. While the main campground area doesn't provide direct river access, there are a couple of sites available at the nearby fishing access point that put you closer to the water. Western Montana features numerous quality river camping options along the Yellowstone, Missouri, and Clark Fork river systems, with fishing access sites often providing the most convenient river proximity. For the best experience, look for designated fishing access campsites that combine riverfront views with basic amenities.

How far west can you camp along Montana's river systems?

Montana's river systems offer camping opportunities extending across the western portion of the state. Far West on the Yellowstone River provides camping access along this major waterway, though the campground itself has limited direct river access with only a couple of sites at the fishing access point. Montana's river camping extends from the eastern plains to the western mountains, with options along the Yellowstone, Missouri, Clark Fork, Bitterroot, and Blackfoot rivers. Access points vary in development level, with some requiring high-clearance vehicles as evidenced by Far West's dirt road access and limited off-ramp accessibility.

What permits and regulations apply for Yellowstone River camping?

At Far West on the Yellowstone River, standard Montana fishing access site regulations apply. Camping is typically limited to designated sites only, with stays generally restricted to 7-14 days depending on seasonal policies. Campfires may be allowed in established fire rings, but restrictions can apply during dry conditions. Montana fishing licenses are required for any fishing activities. For the most current information on permits, reservation requirements, and seasonal regulations, contact Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks before your visit, as rules may change seasonally or annually.
