Petrolia Reservoir

SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Free and drive-in accessible, Petrolia Reservoir sits roughly 15 minutes off the highway outside Hilger, Montana, along a dirt road that winds through farmland before reaching the lake. The turn at the T-intersection has a sign, but reviewers note it can be hard to read. Road conditions matter here: the descent to the lakeside sites is steep enough that anything longer than about 15 feet may have trouble, and rain can leave the lower area muddy. Larger rigs tend to fare better parking on the bluff above, where two-track dispersed spots offer more room to maneuver.

Down at the water, the Fish and Wildlife Service has set up several flat pull-through sites, each with a concrete picnic table and fire ring. Some tables have a roof structure overhead. There is a pit toilet and a primitive boat launch, but no water hookup or power. Cell service is essentially nonexistent. The reservoir holds walleye, pike, and perch, and early-season visitors have noted active bird life on the water when ice is still breaking up. Cows occasionally wander through the sites, which is worth knowing if you're camping with pets.

Crowd levels vary. Midweek visits have drawn reports of having the place entirely to themselves, while holiday weekends can bring generators running through the night. Matthew S. describes the sites as "flat and clean for pitching tents," which reflects what tent campers tend to find here. Broken glass has been spotted in spots, suggesting some local party use, so walking the site before setting up is a reasonable precaution. Campers wanting a more developed alternative can look at Yellow Water Reservoir to the west or Petrolia Lake just nearby.

A free lakeside campground with concrete picnic tables and clean, flat tent sites that many found secluded and peaceful. Several guests observed roaming cattle and noted the remote location requires navigating dirt roads with no cell service.

Nice little lake

It's quite a ways off the highway. Expect about 15 minutes or so. When you get to the T in the road turn Right. There's a sign but it's difficult to read. I wouldn't recommend taking anything large down the hill to the campsites on the lake. The hill up is pretty steep and the sites are small. Van, very small trailers I'd say under 15ft will fit. Tents of course are perfect. Bigger rigs are best parking in  one of the dispersed places on the bluff. Two track roads to those. No cell service whatsoever. Starlink works great tho. Looks like a local party place tho glass all over. I did have a great sleep, it was quiet labor Day night.

Cute local lake

Lots of spots but at the bottom of a big hill. Also very muddy after it rained all night. Place is a bit of a local spot, they were surprised we ended up there being from NY. Lake is at the end of 7 miles of dirt roads going through farm land. Campsite was nice but not quiet, generators were ran all night long. But hey it’s free and the scenery and people were nice!

Gorgeous and private

We pulled in around midnight just to sleep. No toilet that we found but we could easily have missed it. The pull through spaces are private and far enough apart to feel like you have the place to yourself. No bugs, we woke up to cows mooing and a beautiful sunrise over the lake. The wind that came in over the lake helped cool us off as well. Great free find!

Secluded and Peaceful

When it comes to campgrounds, it's hard to beat free. This one is located on a lake in the middle of the Montana badlands/prairie where you will feel secluded and isolated with nature. I was there early April and the lake still had some ice, but was only partially frozen over. Thus there were birds on the water. I fully expect this to be a hotspot as the season progresses.

There was only one other camper when I arrived, and he was there to photograph the birds. He has informed me that in previous visits, this campground has been equally empty. So if you're looking for a quiet place to just relax and get away, this is it.

Each site has a concrete picnic table and a fire ring. Half of the tables are under a shelter. The sites are flat and clean for pitching tents. There is a pit toilet, but no water source. The road in is well-maintained and driveable for most vehicles. There is not much protection from wind, so if you're tent camping, be mindful of that.

Great stop on the way to glacier

We were looking for a place between Devils Tower and glacier national park. Wasn’t thinking this would be anything special that was one of the better sites from our trip so far. They have four or five picnic tables a bathroom and a boat ramp and some cows that wonder around. If you don’t get here in time to get a picnic table you can kind of do camping wherever it seems good for you. Even took a bath in the lake to freshen up. Great site

Free Lakeside Camping Perfect for a Roadtrip Overnight

We tent camped at this rustic park mid-week in August and had the entire place to ourselves!  (Minus the cows).  This park and lake are located about 20 miles East and South of Winnett, and state managed.  Use is free, first come first served, I think.  No cell service, and GPS got us a little lost getting there, but a local helped us out.

There are at least 7 dedicated sites there on the North side of the lake, that each are sort of "pull-though." They would be perhaps too small for anything larger than a teardrop or really short RV, and no power or water hookups.  Each had a nice cement picnic table, and some tables had a really nice roof structure over them.  I think every site had it's own fire ring.  We found some fallen branches to burn, but otherwise no wood on site.  There is a nearby primitive boat launch, and one pit toilet shared by all.  I can't recall if there was a hand pump for water.

The reservoir was fairly low when we were there, and the site was by no means lush, but for a quick overnight it was perfect!  Fish in the lake seemed active in jumping about. We read there are walleye, pike and perch.  The rustic roads surrounding the lake were great for a walk and some night mountain biking.  We also had some free range cows nervously come through the site, which was really novel to us Minnesotans.  Proceed with Care - Cattle at Large!
