Accessible via the Pioneer Mountains Scenic Byway roughly 21 miles south of Wise River, Little Joe sits within campsites near Beaverhead National Forest and runs from May through September. The loop holds just five sites, each with shade trees, arranged around a central hand pump. A vault toilet serves the campground and has been noted as clean and stocked. Sites sit close to the road, though a nearby creek provides background noise at night. RVs up to 28 feet are welcome, reservations are available, and pets are permitted. A short drive up the byway leads to the Grand Vista overlook, worth a stop at dawn or dusk.

Sweet Little (Joe) Spot

Located about 21 miles south of the town of Wise River, MT. Little Joe is a four site Forest Service operated campground for those wanting solitude. While not next to Wise River, there is a small creek a hundred yards to the north that provides natural white noise. The campground offers two single occupancy sites and two double occupancy sites. There are no pull through sites. One restroom and a hand-powered water pump services the campground. The campground is suitable for smaller RVs and camp trailers which helps keep this site largely empty during the week. It is only 7 miles or so from Crystal Park for those rock hounds. Cost is currently $15 per night befor any discounts from Federal passes (then $8/night). While there the restroom was clean and stocked. It's one of my favorite campgrounds on the Pioneer Mountain Scenic Byway (state highway 73) as it is positioned away from most other campgrounds other than dispersed sites. Lupine Picnic Area is approximately 5 miles to the south which offers spectacular views of the East Pioneers.

Moose watching?

Just 5 spots on this loop campground, with the water pump in the middle. You are fairly close to the road, but it is quiet at night and there is a little creek running not too far away to provide some white noise. All sites have nice shade and hammock trees. Vault toilet is clean and stocked. Go up the road a bit and check out the Grand Vista, especially at dawn and dusk. Maybe you will get to see a moose feeding down along the creek.
