Within Kaniksu National Forest, Scotchmans Peak provides a challenging backcountry camping experience accessible only by foot. This US Forest Service site requires hikers to tackle a steep, difficult trail before reaching dispersed camping spots in the last wooded section of the route. Campers must pack in all supplies and pack out all waste, as no amenities exist on-site.
The location sits roughly three-quarters of a mile below the actual peak summit, offering wildlife viewing opportunities including mountain goats. Several clearing areas show evidence of previous camping use. Clark Fork serves as the nearest resupply point for camping near Clark Fork before attempting this demanding hike-in experience.
