SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Within Voyageurs National Park, Johnson Bay N13 provides boat-in camping approximately 9 miles from the Ash River Visitor Center put-in on Kabetogama Lake. The National Park Service manages this backcountry site, which requires detailed navigation charts due to the lake's complex network of islands and channels.

The campsite features two camping pads tucked into trees, a fire ring positioned on a lakeside rock outcrop, picnic table, and two bear boxes. A private toilet serves the site, though campers must bring their own supplies. The protected landing area accommodates multiple watercraft and connects to the campsite via stairs. Early season visitors report minimal boat traffic and regular loon and owl activity during nighttime hours. Campers exploring the broader region can find camping near Voyageurs National Park for additional wilderness experiences.

Beautiful Johnson Bay

Located about 9 miles from the Ash River Visitor Center put in in Kabetogama Lake, this beautiful little “front country” boat in site is another gem. Note: Get a detailed chart before attempting to navigate the lake, as the twists and turns and hundreds of islands can be quite confusing without one.

Beautiful view of the sunrise and surrounding islands, with an amazing “front porch” rock which holds the campfire ring, two camping pads tucked into the trees, firepit, picnic table, 2 bear boxes, and your own private toilet (bring your own TP!). Kayak/canoe landing area is protected from the main channel/wind, can accommodate multiple boats with ease, and is just a short “schlep” up the stairs to the campsite. We stayed here 1 night in early May and saw just a couple of boats the entire time. We fell asleep to loons and owls calling in the night.
