Grousehaven Campground sits within the forested terrain of Rifle River Recreation Area outside Lupton, Michigan, where Grousehaven Lake forms the centerpiece of the camping experience. The campground is smaller than many state park options in the region, with well-shaded sites spread far enough apart that campers report not feeling crowded. Drive-in access makes it straightforward to reach, and sites accommodate RVs up to 50 feet with electric hookups available.
The lake is motor-free, which shapes the pace of activity here considerably. Paddleboarders, kayakers, and canoeists have direct access via a boathouse, and a shallow swimming area with a small beach draws families with young children. Hiking and biking trails run directly behind some sites, connecting campers to the surrounding woods without requiring a drive. "Spacious lot and a trail connected us to a grassy area, boathouse, and beach," notes Hallee L., who also highlighted the no-wake lake as a draw for paddle sports.
Cleanliness at the campground has come up repeatedly across reviews, with some visitors noting inconsistency between the day-use beach bathrooms and the campground's own bathhouse, which multiple long-term visitors describe as well-maintained. Reservations are available and worth booking ahead for summer weekends. Nearby options within the recreation area include Rustic Cabins — Rifle River Recreation Area and Devoe Lake - Rifle River Rec Area for campers who want to compare setups before committing. Families who have made Grousehaven a summer tradition tend to return for the combination of water access, shaded sites, and kid-friendly layout.
