Loons calling across the water at night is one of the more reliable features of Smudge Cove, a free, boat-in or hike-in dispersed site along the Forest Legacy Trail near places to camp near Oquossoc. The site sits just off the water with a long dock for unloading gear by canoe or kayak, plus an established fire ring and picnic table. A tent platform exists on site, though it was noted as needing repair as of 2023. Cupsuptic Campgrounds manages the campsites while the Rangeley Lakes Heritage Trust maintains the surrounding trail network.
