    Kentucky Horse Park Campground

Nice Campground Right between Lexington and Georgetown

I'll preface this with the fact that I am a Lexington, KY Native and have always lived close to the Kentucky Horse Park and Kentucky Horse Park Campground, but have never stayed there until this weekend.

We stayed on Loop A in site #38.

First, site #38 was a great large and fairly level site with 50AMP hookups and Water. There were no sewer hook ups, but the park has 2 dump stations that accommodate 2 RV/Trailers being dumped at one time. The site had a large amount of space between ourselves and our neighbors and we had a lot of extra space behind out paved site that was grassy. A great area for the kids/pets to run around.

The park has 2 playgrounds (one was closed due to COVID and the sanitizing that would have to be done. The park said they didn't have the staff to sanitize the playground further from the office/store). There is a community pool (it was closed because it isn't memorial day yet and the staff is still trying to determine if it will open this season after being closed all of 2020 due to COVID).

You're able to bring your Golf Cart if you would like but you must get a permit from the campground office/store. They say there is a rule that no one under the age of 16 or anyone without a valid drivers license is allowed to drive the golf carts, but this is clearly not enforced, as my kids were nearly run over (more than once) by young kids speeding around on the gold carts.

The park is great for bike riding and you can travel just a short distance to get to the Legacy Trail (a 12 mile paved trail great from biking/running that runs from the horse park into downtown Lexington). It rained most of the day on Saturday while we were there but in the evening, we got to get the bikes out and go see the horses as they were grazing in the fields.

Right next door, you have the World Famous Kentucky Horse Park. Their trail rides are back open (Ages 7 an older $25.00 per person) and they also have their Pony ride for kids 12 and under ($5 a person) opened back up. You can go visit the different barns, go to the museums, etc.

Just 1 exit north on I75 you have  a Camping World, for all of your camping needs and then 1 exit after that you have a Walmart and Lowes for other things. Many food options as well.

There is a gas station just down Iron Works pike for all of your fuel and and snack needs. Attached to the gas station is also a liquor store.

Your smack in the middle of Georgetown and Lexington which both offer several family friendly Craft Beer Breweries/Taprooms, a lot of great local eating options and bars/nightlife options.

On Holidays now, at the Horse Park Campground, you have to have 5 day minimum stay, which can get a bit pricey.

All around though, great little campsite with easy access to I65/I64.

    A.J. Jolly Park & Campground

    AJ Jolly campground

Expensive for what it has to offer. At 48.00 bucks a night yes they do have WIFI in the RV section. They do have concrete pads. It’s a shame they are worthless they are to small to park the average RV on an are on the wrong side of most rigs unless you pull in 1/2 the sites the electric is on the wrong side. The sites are gravel and not level the rest rooms are new and nice. The horse stalks are very nice. If you have a large horse trailer type camper your screwed the sites are small so that only leaves you with the RV sites that are a few 100 feet away from the stables If you want to walk threw the drainage ditch add about 300 ft if you don’t want to walk threw the muck. It’s a shame when they paved the entry road they didn’t spend a little more. “Grant money “ or tax money an do it properly. The main play ground is extremely nice. About 1/3 Mile walk. They do have a small playground in the rv section. For horses again they have a nice setup for big RVs it Sux they have a dump station. Situated in between the entry road to the Fkatwood rv section and equestrian area The main lake is nice you can rent kayaks canoes. Or use your own boat. The boat ramp is nice the other end of the lake at the flat wood rv section. Is t really a lake it’s a back water shallow mud hole depending on the time of the year. Mosquitoes the size of jet fighters. Will rather eat you alive or carry you off. “Lol sorry could t resist “ it gets bad the park is clean and well maintained Except for the camp sites

    Kentucky Horse Park Campground

    Kentucky Horse Park Campground, KY

Kentucky Horse Park is a working horse farm and educational center. Unfortunately due to COVID-19 the tours were unavailable when we visited. Regardless, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The sites were spacious and well maintained. They all come with a picnic table, fire pit and full hook-ups. The bathrooms, showers and laundry room were clean and also well maintained. The staff was friendly and accommodating. A great location, especially if planning to visit Lexington during your stay.

    Kentucky Horse Park Campground

    Beautiful, flat, spacious

We love the horse park. First location is wonderful. Literally on the grounds of the gorgeous Kentucky Horse Park and less than 30 minutes to UK’s Campus.

The sites are spacious and fairly flat. Big bonus for state parks. There are lots of mature trees which are great for every season of camping.

All sites are back in only and there are no full hook ups. This wasn’t an issue as there are 2 dump stations with 2 pipes each.

    We recommend this to anyone!

    Kentucky Horse Park Campground

Beautifuly kept and right next to the amazing horse park

We spent two nights here and were pleasantly surprised that most of the campsites had probably at least 50 to 60 feet between each one and lots of grass and trees. The campsite we stayed in, 140, was a pull through so that was bonus. Most of the campsites look like they had at least water and electric and I think there might have been some sites that had sewer as well. Right next-door to the Kentucky Horse Park, which is a must see. Very interesting museum and lots of barn with different types of horses in them to visit. If you buy your ticket at the campground, you would get five dollars off the admission fee.

Guide to Morning View

The Morning View area of Kentucky sits in the gentle hills of Kenton County, about 20 miles south of Cincinnati. This region experiences four distinct seasons with humid summers reaching into the 80s and winters that can drop below freezing. Most equestrian-friendly campgrounds in the area are situated near water features with varying degrees of shade coverage, making spring and fall the most comfortable camping seasons.

What to Do

Kayaking on nearby lakes: A.J. Jolly Park & Campground offers water activities on their lakefront property. "Close to Cincinnati but each site is wooded and on lake front, lots to do!" notes Anna N. The park features kayak rentals and multiple launch points for personal watercraft.

Trail riding opportunities: Versailles State Park Campground provides extensive horse trails throughout its 5,988 acres. "Versailles State Park is a clean and family friendly camping destination... There are some nice trails and a lake where you can fish and kayak," reports Jessie W. The park maintains dedicated horse trails separate from hiking paths.

Disc golf course: Winton Woods Campground includes an 18-hole disc golf course that's perfect for beginners. "A short 18 hole Disc Golf course is close by. It is a easy course great for beginners," mentions Dan G. The course is within walking distance of most campsites.

What Campers Like

Clean, modern facilities: A.J. Jolly Park & Campground receives praise for its updated amenities. "Bath house is new very clean closest to sites 10 12 11 9 and 7 they have a large covered area for events also in the Flatwood area," shares Jeffrey D. The park regularly maintains its shower facilities and common areas.

Spacious, private sites: Cowan Lake State Park Campground offers generously sized camping spots. "The lot was VERY large and well maintained. The asphalt pad was decently level; a picnic table and fire ring were included," states Kim H. Many sites feature enough space for multiple tents or a large RV setup.

Proximity to urban amenities: East Fork State Park Campground provides a balance of natural surroundings with nearby conveniences. "You can get to the lake in about a 15 minute drive," explains Elana C. The park's location allows campers to access grocery stores and restaurants within a short drive.

What You Should Know

Site leveling challenges: Many horse campgrounds have uneven terrain. "Pad are about 12 x12 concrete so that's a plus but the location of the pads if you want to use your RV awning means your wheels in what ever your using are going to be nearly off the level area or in the grass," warns Jeffrey D. about A.J. Jolly Park & Campground.

Reservation requirements: Winton Woods Campground books up quickly during peak seasons. "Get your ideal site early during busy season," advises Kenneth D. Holiday weekends often require booking months in advance.

Seasonal amenities: Not all facilities operate year-round. "Went in October, but did not write review until December. Great place and want to come back in the summer to enjoy the lake and pool," shares Burns G. about Versailles State Park. Many water features and some bath facilities close during colder months.

Tips for Camping with Families

Playground options: East Fork State Park Campground offers multiple play areas. "Playgrounds are in several loops (I saw them in C and G)," notes Lee D. The park maintains separate playgrounds for different age groups.

Bike-friendly environments: Versailles State Park Campground features dedicated cycling paths. "Has great bike trails & walking trails. Clean bathrooms," mentions Shannon C. The paved paths are suitable for children of various skill levels.

Educational opportunities: Cowan Lake State Park Campground incorporates learning into outdoor experiences. "I loved the informational boxes and tags that they had on the trees or plants. This is helpful if you have little ones with you," explains Kenpocentaur K. The park offers nature programs specifically designed for younger campers.

Tips from RVers

Hookup locations: Kentucky Horse Park Campground provides full-service sites, but with placement challenges. "Water hook ups are on the opposite side of electrical on several sites," notes Jeffrey at A.J. Jolly Park. Bring extension cords and longer water hoses to ensure proper connections.

Dump station logistics: Plan for potential wait times when departing. "I would also note that there is only one dump station for the three campgrounds so there can be quite the line when trying to get out of there on a Sunday afternoon," advises Jessie W. about Versailles State Park. Consider alternate departure times to avoid congestion.

Site selection advice: Choose carefully based on your rig size. "Some sites are not level at all. So be sure to read up on the site you want before you book it," recommends Burns G. Research specific site dimensions and reviews before committing to a reservation at horse campgrounds near Morning View, Kentucky.
