What to do
Trail riding with horses: At Versailles State Park Campground, equestrian travelers can explore designated horse trails through wooded terrain. "The horse stalks are very nice. If you have a large horse trailer type camper your screwed the sites are small," notes Jeffrey D.
Fishing opportunities: The 230-acre lake at Versailles State Park offers good fishing spots accessible from the campground. "Very nice campground and park. Well set up. Easy to get around. Nice lake to kayak on," reports Michael W.
Mountain biking: Kentucky Horse Park Campground provides excellent terrain for cyclists. "Taking the horses out here was a wonderful experience, it was great having so many different trails to go on in order to not only train the new horses how to trail ride, but also take the more experienced horses on tougher trails," mentions Jill R.
Water activities: Enjoy boating at East Fork State Park Campground, which features a separate marina for campers. "This Park Has a Little for Everyone... There was several miles of bike trails, bridle trails and hiking trails. There is also a beach and marina for campers away from the main beach and marina for those just visiting the park for the day," writes Andrea F.
What campers like
Well-maintained equestrian facilities: Horseback riders appreciate the practical amenities at equestrian campgrounds. "Overnighted here with my horses on my way south for the winter, but will definitely be coming back and spending more time. Stall accommodations are excellent, even include bedding," notes Judy B. about A.J. Jolly Park.
Family-friendly camping: Winton Woods Campground receives high marks for accommodating families. "Nice campground in Cincinnati with lots to do for Everyone. Tent/RV sites were level and had lots of Shade and trees for Hammocks. 1.7 mile paved walking trail is great for walking, running and biking," says Dan G.
Clean amenities: Campground cleanliness stands out to visitors. "This is a nice site. easy to back in. nestled up to some trees. Not good for tents. Pad is long," remarks Mike F. about Versailles State Park loop C, site 202.
Pool access: Swimming facilities provide welcome relief during summer stays. "The pool is nice, and the kids love the slides and diving board. They also have a fenced in area for small children with a baby pool and sprinkler," shares Jessie W. about Versailles State Park.
What you should know
Site selection matters: Many campgrounds have variable site quality and levelness. At Clifty Falls State Park Campground, "Site 22 was so sloped our red levelers barely made it work. Site needed gravel, it was mostly sticky dirt that got tracked into our travel trailer immediately after sweeping," reports Beverly J.
Seasonal considerations: Weather impacts camping experiences significantly. "We camped in a tent and it was just Beautiful there. We will be going back this year but this time we will be going in a Camper that we just bought," writes John M. about A.J. Jolly Campground.
Reservation planning: Popular weekends fill quickly, especially for specialized camping. "When we reserved months earlier, we knew that our first night (a Saturday) was 100% full as we got the very last site," notes Lee D. about East Fork State Park.
Cell service variations: Connectivity varies widely across campgrounds. "For a park so close to a large city (Cincinnati), I was surprised the cell service was so lacking (on Verizon). We eked out one and occasionally two bars of 4G," mentions Lee D.
Tips for camping with families
Playground proximity: Select sites near recreational facilities for easier access. "The main play ground is extremely nice. About 1/3 Mile walk. They do have a small playground in the rv section," Jeffrey D. notes about A.J. Jolly Park.
Trail difficulty awareness: Assess trail ratings before hiking with children. At Clifty Falls State Park, "We went on one of the easy trails. Be aware this area is very rocky so easy is relative to the surroundings," advises Kristene B.
Water activities for kids: Choose campgrounds with swimming options during summer. "They also sell concessions at the pool as well," mentions Jessie W. about Versailles State Park facilities.
Halloween camping: Consider fall camping for special events. "We love the Halloween festivities! It is so fun to see all the costumes and the decorations all over the campground. We plan to make it an annual tradition!" shares Jessie W.
Tips from RVers
Site layout challenges: Understand electrical and water hookup placements before arrival. "On the general setup of newer campers and motorhomes. Pad are about 12 x12 concrete so that's a plus but the location of the pads if you want to use your RV awning means your wheels in whatever your using are going to be nearly off the level area or in the grass," explains Jeffrey D. about A.J. Jolly Park.
Dump station access: Factor in departure timing to avoid lines. "I would also note that there is only one dump station for the three campgrounds so there can be quite the line when trying to get out of there on a Sunday afternoon," advises Jessie W. about Versailles State Park.
Rig size limitations: Some campgrounds have specific site constraints. "Most if the sites are large enough for 30 and larger RVs but were designed by someone who was clueless," notes Jeffrey D. about A.J. Jolly Flatwood section.
