Nicknamed the "Little Smokies" because of the area's resemblance to the Great Smoky Mountains, Brown County encompasses nearly 16,000 acres of rugged hills, ridges and fogshrouded ravines. Glaciers from the most recent ice ages stopped short of the "hills o'Brown," but their meltwaters helped create the narrow ridges, steep slopes and deep gullies of Brown County State Park. Indiana's largest park is a traditional fall color hot spot, with nearly 20 miles of tree-lined roads and many scenic vistas overlooking miles of uninterrupted forestland.

**Campground Check-in/Check-out times are 2 PM Mondays through Saturdays and 5 PM on Sundays and Holidays.**   
  
**Winter Camping Information (early November through late March):** Brown County State Park offers winter camping in some of our campgrounds as noted below. Reservations accepted year round. Please check with the Park Office for more detailed information on the dates campgrounds switch from Summer to Winter Season (and back) as these will change each year.

The Best Camping Near Nashville, Indiana

Went for fall break &amp; their Halloween week! So much fun 

Great in the fall! 

The Campground is on top of the Ridgeline. When we pulled in it was raining and there was smoky mist hanging over the forests. We set up camp and since there were no bugs first week of October we slept with the screen open on the tent. There is a new pit toilet by our campsite which was very clean. We didn't bother with showers because we are stinky mountain bikers. So I can't comment on the shower house. The ranger told us that all the deer had been killed by over hunting in the park, but when we drove back to the Campground after dinner there was a whole herd of deer hanging out at the camp ground. He also showed us how to find paw paw fruit in the woods which taste like a cross between a banana and a peach. Delicious. We only camped two nights but we had a lovely time. We rode the trails which were surprisingly dry and fun. We wanted to ride the flow trail HogsHollow but we didn't know how to get back up the mountain. It's 5.5 miles down and I'm not in good enough shape to climb back up. So maybe next time we go we can call for an Uber since it turns out it is available there. There is supposed to be 200 miles of singletract trails in the area plus horse trails. There is a horse barn for trail rides and also a horse camp. There is a lodge there too but I didn't have time to see it. Also a swimming pool and nature center. The town of Nashville is right there with lots of artsy shops and restaurants in rustic buildings. There are numerous hotels and a music venue and a playhouse. Something for everyone. Unfortunately the bike shop right outside the park went out of business. Can't wait to go back. 

Mountain biker paradise

Brown County State Park is near Nashville....Indiana. Much smaller then the famous one, however a lot to see and to do. Excellent area to explore. 
The campground is well set up. The sites are nice size and level-ish. The facilities are newer and older depending on where your at in the park. They are well maintained though. 
There are a bunch of trails that are shared by horse back riders , bikers and hikers so be aware as you drive and move around the park. 

Nashville, IN

We stopped by Brown County State Park for  one night during our travels.  This was our first visit and stopped here on a whim.  We were very pleased with what the park had to offer.  The campground area is very large.  Several hundred sites spread out over miles of rolling hills.  This place offers everything from remote rustic camping to front country modern camping. We saw a black bear at dusk digging through a garbage can at one of the picnic areas along the parks interior roads - black bears are reported as not being present in the park.  I've witnessed countless black bears in the wilderness and this wasn't a case of mistaken identity.  It was a black bear digging through a garbage can. 

Something for everyone 

Tons of campsites and most have decent trees and privacy (even many of the electric/RV spaces looked nice). As tent campers, we stayed in raccoon ridge which was excellent (quiet). Pit toilets at the back of the loop were probably the cleanest pits I've ever used. Bonus that there are dedicated mens/womens pits. The shower house at the top of the loop was dated but completely adequate with hot water (works for me). The picnic tables in the park are a bit odd (very short) but was plenty of space for my husband and I. With larger groups, it might be difficult to fit everyone around the table. 

  

The park has so many activities. We visited the nature center which was nothing spectacular but still something nice to do. We also hiked on 3 of the trails and went up the fire tower. It's nice to have a bike to explore since the park is so big. I wish I was a mountain biker, the trails looked amazing and the park was packed with mountain bikers. 

  

We will definitely keep this park on our list of semi-local camping for weekend trips.

Excellent camping

Holiday Fourth of July 2022 weekend  the start Park was special excitement in downtown Nashville, Indiana a short drive outside the State Park. The town has souvenirs shops in the old 50's style look, dining, groceries, ect... The State Park has scenic mountain views, Campgrounds has over 250+sites and two lakes, T-Mobile (good 2 bars )there is a reservoir ( Lake Monroe )must see 30 minutes outside the park west entrance in Bloomington, Indiana.

Best option in the park and quietest.  Some spots are uneven and tight, but also some very large (back of loop and some of the spots on side of loop in the front)

First, let me start, the staff was amazing! The bathrooms and showers were clean, and every DNR we spoke with was the best. 

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE!

Our third Indiana state park. Still impressed, they have all been friendly, well maintained with good, spread out sites and good signage everywhere (even the trails). All the rest rooms are spotlessly clean.  
We were there mid-week, so very few of the 480 (!) sites were occupied, except in Buffalo Ridge, the primary RV loop. There are three loops, Buffalo ridge (RV), Raccoon Ridge which is tent sites around the outside, with electric inside the loop. Which would be suitable for RVs. Many of the tent sites are split-level, meaning the fire pit and tent area is down a hill from where you park your car. We have a mini pop-up, and had no problem parking both it and car on the pad, and, these sites have two picnic tables, upper and lower. Check the photos when you reserve!  
We drove through Taylor ridge loop, and it's your best choice for getting away from it all.   
The camp store is stocked with the basics, but has more souvenirs than food or camp needs. That's okay, as some of their goods are better quality than many other places.  
The park has a classic old CCC lodge (though you enter through the modern addition) so if you don't want to cook, eat at the restaurant (open till 8:PM), great food, generous portions.   
The park also features an Olympic size pool (capacity 2,000). You cannot walk there from the campground unless you are very hardy and very determined.   
You may think of Indiana as flat farmland, but this park is VERY hilly, with many scenic overlooks. It has two man-made lakes. Unsure about boating options on the larger one.   
Another big feature are equestrian trails and a horse campground, see someone else's review for that.  
Nearby is the town of Nashville, which is full of art and craft galleries as well as multiple fudge shops, hand-made soaps, etc... Touristy but quaint. Was surprisingly crowded when we passed through on a Friday morning.     
We are planning to go back to take advantage of all we missed in the area. Oh, I should point out that there are many private campgrounds nearby, it's a very popular  area.
