Brown County State Park encompasses 15,776 acres of rolling hills and forest, with Raccoon Ridge Campground serving as one of its quieter camping options. Managed by Indiana DNR, this established campground sits along a ridgeline within the park's extensive trail network. The campground provides both drive-in and walk-in access, though several reviewers mention rough road conditions leading to some sites.
Raccoon Ridge operates as the park's designated tent camping area, with sites arranged around the outside of the loop and electric hookups available on the interior. Many tent sites feature split-level design, with fire pits and tent areas positioned downhill from parking spots. Brian O. notes that these sites include "two picnic tables, upper and lower" to accommodate the terrain. The loop maintains a reputation for being the quietest of the park's three camping areas, with clean pit toilets and an adequate shower house serving campers.
The campground provides access to Brown County's 200 miles of trails, including mountain biking singletrack and shared-use paths for hikers and equestrians. Two man-made lakes offer fishing opportunities, while the park's Olympic-size pool serves up to 2,000 visitors. Cell service reaches two bars for T-Mobile users. For additional camping options, Taylor Ridge Campground — Brown County State Park sits just 0.3 miles southwest for those seeking more remote sites. Reserve ahead during peak seasons, as the park's 480 total sites can fill quickly despite the expansive layout.
Description
Nicknamed the "Little Smokies" because of the area's resemblance to the Great Smoky Mountains, Brown County encompasses nearly 16,000 acres of rugged hills, ridges and fogshrouded ravines. Glaciers from the most recent ice ages stopped short of the "hills o'Brown," but their meltwaters helped create the narrow ridges, steep slopes and deep gullies of Brown County State Park. Indiana's largest park is a traditional fall color hot spot, with nearly 20 miles of tree-lined roads and many scenic vistas overlooking miles of uninterrupted forestland.
Campground Check-in/Check-out times are 2 PM Mondays through Saturdays and 5 PM on Sundays and Holidays.
