Sherwood Forest

SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Reservations are available at Sherwood Forest, a municipally managed campground in Hillsboro, Illinois, open April 1 through October 31 with nightly rates running $25 to $45. Sites accommodate RVs up to 72 feet with electric and water hookups, and a dump station is on site. Tent campers have access to an open grassy area near the lake where they can choose their own spot. The campground sits within a forested setting, with tree coverage along the perimeter that gives the property a degree of separation from the surrounding area.

Most sites are occupied by long-term campers, which shapes the overall atmosphere. Several reviewers note that the campground runs quietly, and the hosts have drawn consistent praise for being hands-on and welcoming, including meeting new arrivals in the evening and providing golf cart tours of available spots. Site size varies: some reviewers found their sites spacious with large lawn areas, while RV campers noted that hookup sites can feel close together, with limited tree coverage between neighbors.

The campground has lake access, which is a draw for water-oriented visitors, and also provides boat-in entry for those arriving by water. Facilities include showers, toilets, drinking water, WiFi, and campfire access. Jeff B. describes the playground as "super nice and very well maintained." Cleanliness comes up positively across multiple reviews. Pets are allowed.

Campers based in the Hillsboro area can find campgrounds near Hillsboro across a range of settings. Nearby alternatives include River Front Campground to the southwest and Lake Lou Yaeger Campground to the west. Sherwood Forest is a reasonable base for anyone wanting full hookups, host-supported check-in, and lake proximity in central Illinois.

Great spot by lake

This place was amazing other than the humidity (mid july). Showed up and the hosts were super nice and helped me to my spot. They have lots of camper spots, most seemed like long term campers. I used a tent and had a great spot near the lake. No other tent campers around. They have a good open spot for tents that you just find a spot and set up. Campers seemed nice and we re quiet.

Nicest hosts around

The hosts at this campground were really nice. The bathrooms are clean, the place is quiet, and the nature around this place is a plus. As many people have mentioned, it’s a hidden gem!

Amazing Find!

After a massive disappointment at a nearby state park, we came to Sherwood Forest as a last resort. We were beyond pleasantly surprised!

First off, the camp host came and met me at 7pm on Sunday to get me set up. He took me on a golf cart to give me a tour of the available spots. He was so completely friendly and just all-around good!

The place is an amazing little resort-like campground. It’s nicely tucked away with plenty of shade.

The playground is super nice and very well maintained.

Our site is very large with an equally large grass lawn area.

I didn’t visit the bathhouse or laundry facilities but judging by the cleanliness of everything else, I’m sure those are exemplary.

I will most certainly be back!

Gorgeous campground

This campground is like a resort but it’s not! It’s a city campground. The folks are great, friendly and yet it’s a quiet campground! Full hookups and your not close together, big rig accessible. I can’t say enough about this campground.

Quiet and Clean

We stayed here in our Motorhome but the sites are pretty small and you are right next to your neighbor. There is tree coverage that surrounds the campground so it feels very secluded from the rest of the world but it would be even better if they added more trees between campsites.
