This US Forest Service campground requires navigating a steep, narrow access road with at least 15 switchbacks to reach the South Fork Clearwater River. The free facility operates from mid-June through mid-October and provides basic amenities including maintained pit toilets, though campers must pack out all trash. River access attracts rafters and occasional jet boats throughout the season.
The campground sees light use outside of fall hunting season, when horseback hunters frequent the area. A trail follows the river in both directions from the site. Campers looking for additional options can explore campgrounds near Elk City, located about 20 miles north. The rough access road and pack-it-out policy make this spot best suited for self-sufficient campers comfortable with challenging driving conditions.
Description
This remote campground and boating site rests on the north shore of the Salmon River. Access is via a rough road with many tight switchbacks, not recommended for vehicles towing trailers. The facilities include campsites, a toilet, two stock feed bunks, a boat dock (sand) and large parking area. No tables or fire grates are available.
