Remote lake access and rough roads define the experience at Sheep Springs, a Bureau of Land Management campground operating seasonally from July through October on BLM land outside the Coeur d'Alene Field Office. The access route is rough, so high-clearance vehicles are worth considering before making the trip. No pets are permitted. Campers who reach the site will find a near-lake setting managed for camp sites near St. Maries without developed amenities typical of fee-based campgrounds, making it a reasonable choice for self-sufficient campers comfortable with minimal infrastructure.
Description
This is a primitive backcountry site serving as the trailhead to the Crystal Lake Trail. Crystal Lake Trail is a high-elevation rugged backcountry trail provides foot access to Crystal Lake. It is dangerous and not suitable for motorized, equestrian or bicycling activities. Primitive camping is available at the trailhead and also allowed at the lake. The access road is narrow, steep and rough. Three camping sites are available at the trailhead with fire rings, picnic tables and a vault toilet.
