CAMPER SUMMARY PRESENTED BYFord

Wilderness Landing offers primitive equestrian camping with dedicated horse corrals along the Blackwater River. The sites accommodate both tent and RV camping with no hookups, though the campground provides clean restroom facilities with hot and cold running water. Campers report a quiet, peaceful setting with clean showers and toilet buildings. The campground features pavilions with tables and barbecue grills located directly on the sandy beach area of the river. The primitive camping area includes grass sites with some shade. Access involves traveling over rough roads, which some visitors note as the only drawback to this otherwise well-regarded location.

Coldwater Equestrian Campground in Blackwater River State Forest maintains 55 RV and tent campsites with water and electrical hookups alongside 60 horse stalls. All sites include water and electrical connections, with a dump station available for RV users. The campground runs along Cold Water Creek with easy access from most sites and features a private sandbar exclusively for campers. Camping areas from sites 16 to 56 offer variable shade coverage with many positioned directly on the water. The facility includes a large community center available by reservation. Horse owners should note the campground's well-maintained trails designed specifically for equestrian use. Despite limited cell service in this remote wooded location, the campground receives high marks for its cleanliness, maintenance, and friendly ranger staff who regularly interact with visitors.

Coldwater Equestrian Campground — Blackwater River State Forest

Perfect secluded equestrian camp with horse stable and trails.

This beautiful equestrian campground offers 55 RV/tent campsites and one tent only site and 60 horse stalls. All campsites have water and electrical hookups. There is a dump station, restrooms, showers, and a dining facility available by reservation. Cold Water Creek runs along the north edge of the campgrounds with easy access from the camp sites. A very beautiful area. Only complaint is the the campsites are right next to each other with no screening between sites.

Coldwater Equestrian Campground — Blackwater River State Forest

    Peace and quiet on Coldwater

Most of the sites from #16 to #56 are shaded, some more than others. All the sites are not the same size, some being larger than the others. Very friendly staff especially the Rangers. Faye (one of the rangers) is great. We had our 3 year old granddaughter with us and she came by at least twice a day to give her a ride on the golf cart and printed of pages she could color on rainy days. She didn’t discriminate either..all the children at the campground got to take a ride. Lots of trails to ride your horses. A lot of the campsites are right on the water. You even have a private huge sandbar for campers only. The showers and bathrooms were always clean and nice. Even though we didn’t use it, there’s a large community center on site to use. We stayed on site #56 and it was right on the water. It was also next to the road. The site was extra super sandy (beach sand) and would be a lot better if they removed some of it. All the other campers were super friendly. We will be back.

    Geneva State Lake

    Beautiful and secluded

Note - I drive a 20’ van - so non level is ok for me but these sites were not level - but I spent 2 nights sat/sun - and it was gorgeous especially for sunrise. Wish I could have stayed longer but I didn’t want to get stuck there in the rain - it was about 5 miles of dirt roads to get in there and they were well maintained but I didn’t want to risk it.

There are 2 hiking trails - more like atv trails that go to either side of the lake from the campground. You can go further into the forest but it was deer hunting season so I didn’t explore.

It was so peaceful and the sunrises over the lake were breathtaking.

$5 a day and there is a QR code on the board to pay, or you can by an annual pass for $40 if you plan on staying at least 9 days it’s worth it. It doesn’t hold your place on the form unless you create an account which is why the dyrt link doesn’t work.

Overall if I’m passing through again I would go back.

Also appreciated the free trash cleanup, clean porta potties and picnic tables. No fire rings really but you can tell where people burn campfires.

It’s a well maintained park and you can tell a lot of love has gone into it. Even had a ranger come through!

    Great for free

Beautiful views, clean restrooms, and free. Other campers were very friendly. The only reason for a 3 is the rough drive getting there.

    Wilderness Landing

    Nice little campground.

It's not on the big side of campgrounds but still has some of the amenities. No hookups at the campsites but there is running water (hot and cold) in the bath house with flushing toilets. Power outlets in the bath house as well. It is located right on the Blackwater River and has a boat launch and two pavilions with tables and barbeque grills right on the beach. The river is sand bottom and fairly clear. My big ol' malamute "Stealie" loves the river! The best part is it's FREE! For up to 14 days.
