Blakeley State Park spans 2,000 acres in Spanish Fort, Alabama, about 15 minutes northeast of Daphne. The park combines historic Civil War sites with diverse terrain including wetlands, forests, and riverfront access. Campers can expect moderate temperatures year-round with hot, humid summers and mild winters, though rainfall occurs regularly throughout the year.
What to do
Explore Civil War history: Blakeley State Park features extensive Civil War sites with walking and auto cell phone tours. "2000 acres. Walking auto cell phone tours of civil war. Boat tours. Big pull through rv spots and a tent campground. Awesome," notes Kevin L. about Blakeley State Park Campground.
Take a boat excursion: River cruises offer wildlife viewing and historical information. "Amazing cruises along the Delta with lots of wildlife viewing and history!! They have sunset cruises, seafood cruises, and seasonal themed cruises. Definitely the highlight of visiting this whole area," writes Lynn G.
Ride horses on trails: Several parks in the area accommodate equestrians. At Magnolia Branch Wildlife Reserve, "Horse stable for overnight. If you enjoy hiking, fishing, kayaking, biking or horseback riding this place Is for you," according to Caitlin M.
What campers like
Spacious campsites: Sites at most horse campgrounds near Daphne offer ample space. "HUGE sites, very secluded. If I look really hard through the woods I can see a neighbor," reports Laurie A. about Apalachee RV Campground.
Water activities: Many campgrounds feature water access for swimming and fishing. "They rent tubes to float the creek or canoes to paddle the ponds in the park. Ponds have fish to catch, don't even need an Alabama fishing license to fish," explains Mark S. about Magnolia Branch Wildlife Reserve.
Varied accommodations: Campgrounds offer multiple lodging options. "Campgrounds are shaded in fairly dense forests for good privacy. They have simple campsites to full RV campsites, all have a fire ring and similar atmosphere. There are a few different campgrounds, one is tent only. They also have relatively new camping shelters that get you out of the bugs," mentions Lynn G.
What you should know
Leveling challenges: Some sites require extra effort to level RVs. "Some of the sites are so unlevel. But the historical tour of the park is amazing. So much information about the civil war. Other than the rv sites being so unlevel the park is really nice," warns Michael about Blakeley State Park.
Operating hours: Check campground hours before arrival. "Gate closes at 4:00 PM (Feb). Restrooms sketchy. But nice sites," reports Stephen D. about Magnolia Branch Wildlife Reserve.
Bathroom facilities: Bathroom quality and availability varies. "The bathroom was clean, had a light, very soft toilet paper, and hand sanitizer," notes Amy B. about Peaceful Camping in the Woods.
Tips for camping with families
Multiple activity options: Look for campgrounds with diverse recreation. "If you bring your family, this is the perfect spot for you. If you bring a horse, a bike, or good hiking shoes this is the perfect spot for you," shares Nicole G. about Blakeley State Park.
Playground access: Some sites have dedicated play areas. "The sprawling playground that aligns the campsites assures of loud, screaming children at all hours," cautions Jim about Magnolia Branch.
Junior Ranger programs: Educational activities keep children engaged. "Woke up to begin the junior ranger packet for our kiddos (provided at checkout) and hiked and explored all day," explains Nicole G.
Tips from RVers
Site selection matters: Request level sites when available. "Big camping spaces- semi private. Kayaking trails all around in the park and local. Close by to big city life but camping in the wild yonder," suggests Christie M. about Anchors Aweigh RV Resort.
Full hookup availability: Many equestrian campgrounds offer complete services. "Super friendly staff and the spots, wowza, they are huge and all pull through. Bring your bikes, lots of roads to explore with little traffic. Oh, and all sites also have sewer!" shares DALLEEN about Blakeley State Park.
Seasonal considerations: Some amenities vary by season. "Small friendly very clean park. All paved and pets welcome. Only negative would be the pool isn't heated however they have a nice hot tub," mentions John G. about Anchors Aweigh RV Resort.
