Kayaking, fishing, and paddling draw campers to River Junction Campground in Withlacoochee State Forest, where several sites sit directly on the Little Withlacoochee River as it meets the main Withlacoochee. The access road into the campground, SW 113th Street, runs narrow and rough, with potholes that can turn treacherous after rain, so low-clearance vehicles and large rigs should approach with caution. Backing into sites can be tight, and overhanging trees along the entry road add another challenge for longer trailers. Cell service is spotty across most carriers. The forest setting is oak-heavy, with low shrubs providing solid visual separation between sites.
Water levels on the river shift considerably by season. As one returning camper notes, "late spring into summer river is high and fast," while by March or April the water runs low enough that reaching the adjacent lake may require a short portage. Site 14 is a paddler favorite, with a spring-fed pool directly in front of it. Sites 1, 14, and 16 can be accessed by boat or paddle, making them appealing for those arriving by water. Wildlife is active here, particularly at dusk and into the night, when coyotes are audible from the surrounding forest.
Reservations are required for most sites through ReserveAmerica, with a gate code provided upon booking. Sites 1 through 3 were historically walk-up and cash-pay, though policies have shifted over time, so confirming current procedures before arrival is worth the call. Showers have hot water. Cleanliness of the bathrooms tends to slip after busy weekends, so timing a visit mid-week generally means better conditions. The campground runs quiet on weekdays but fills up on weekends, when noise from other campers can become a factor.
At $13 per night, River Junction sits among several camping near Nobleton options in this part of Withlacoochee State Forest. Campers with larger rigs or those wanting full hookups may find Silver Lake Campground — Withlacoochee State Forest a better fit, as it accommodates bigger setups more comfortably than River Junction's tight, forested layout.

5827 SW 121st. AVE. WEBSTER, FL 33597 River Junction Campground is located within the Withlacoochee State Forest (Sumter County), less than one half hour northeast of Brooksville, FL. This campground is located at the junction of the Little Withlacoochee River and Withlacoochee River at the southern end of Silver Lake and has the following facilities: centrally located restroom and showers, and potable water at each camp site. The day use area has a boat ramp and picnic area. Recreational activities featured here are: fishing, boating, canoe trail, hiking and picnicking.
Pets Allowed.
To insure pets are compatible with other visitors and to protect our forest resources, all pet owners must follow the rules listed below:
- Provide proof of rabies vaccination when registering to camp or have proof of vaccination (tag) on pet.
- Keep all pets confined, leashed or otherwise under the physical control of a person at all times (excluding voice control). Maximum length of leashes is 10 feet.
- Pets must be well behaved at all times.
- Pets must be confined in the owner’s camping unit (tent, camper, RV) during designated quiet hours from 10:00 pm to 8:00 am.
- Unconfined pets may not be left unattended for more than 30 minutes and must be leashed. Health Dept. reg-ulations exclude pets from bathhouses (service dogs allowed).
- Pet owners must pick up after their pets and properly dispose of all pet waste in trash receptacles.
- Pets that are noisy, vicious, dangerous, disturbing or intimidating to forest visitors and other pets or that damage forest resources are considered to be nuisances and will not be permitted to remain in the forest.
Please contact WSF Dispatch at 352-797-4100 each day before you begin your outing to verify if there will be any prescribed burns during that day.
No hunting allowed in campgrounds. Please refer to kiosk or contact myfwc.com for specific hunting seasons and dates if planning on using any of the hiking trails.
Per Florida Administrative Code, 5I-4006(4)(k), Chainsaw use in camping facilities is prohibited.
Operation/use of chainsaws in other areas of the forest requires a Fuel Wood Permit.

The Florida Forest Service will close all campgrounds and recreation areas on State Forests if the county where the State Forest is located is placed under a Tropical Storm or Hurricane WARNING by the National Weather Service. Reservations will be automatically refunded for closures related to tropical weather.
