    SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

The Connecticut River Valley near Haddam provides several established campgrounds with options for tent, RV, and cabin camping. Devil's Hopyard State Park Campground in East Haddam offers sites from April through September with electric hookups and fire rings, while Wolf's Den Family Campground provides more amenities including cabin rentals. Hammonasset State Park Campground, located about 20 miles southwest near Madison, features beachfront camping with tent, RV, and cabin options. Most developed campgrounds in the region maintain seasonal operations, typically closing between late September and early May.

Reservations are strongly recommended for all campgrounds in the area, particularly during summer weekends when sites fill quickly. Many campgrounds require booking weeks or months in advance for prime summer dates. A visitor commented that "Connecticut is LACKING when it comes to outdoor activities when compared to some of the places around the country. That being said, it's more rewarding when you find a little gem." Weather conditions remain mild through summer and fall, though spring camping may encounter rain. Most campgrounds provide basic amenities like fire rings, picnic tables, and access to restrooms, while private campgrounds typically offer more extensive facilities including showers, camp stores, and recreational activities. Cell service is generally reliable throughout the region.

Campers consistently rate waterfront access as a significant draw for camping in the Haddam area. Rocky Neck State Park Campground, approximately 25 miles southeast, receives positive reviews for its beach access. A recent review noted that "the beach is about a 1 mile walk or drive from the campground. The walk is lovely and I have seen deer, turkeys, many birds, skunks, raccoons, and other wildlife along the way." Family-friendly amenities represent another highlight across several campgrounds, with Wolf's Den and Riverdale Farm Campsites offering activities for children. Proximity to natural attractions like the Connecticut River, hiking trails, and state parks provides additional recreational opportunities. Noise levels vary significantly between state park campgrounds, which enforce quiet hours, and private campgrounds that may host more organized activities and gatherings.

      It Was Nice

Brought our dog along and really appreciated having a trail we could walk together. It was nice being able to get out for a walk without even leaving the campground.

      Selden Neck State Park Campground

      Campsite

I do not recommend staying at this campsite. As you can't drive to the Campsite, as you have to come on a kayak or canoe.

      Hammonasset State Park Campground

      Outstanding campground, park and location

Overall a superb spot to either stay put and enjoy the camp, park and beach or to use as a base to explore the region. Huge campground, yet peaceful. Online map would make it seem spaces are tight but it is a very big area and so ample room to stretch out your space. Not a lot of privacy as most spaces are out in the open or light tree area but it is not an invasive feeling situation. Very popular for CT families with biking, walking and the beautiful beach right here. Lots of grass, level sites. A few sites have electric but not many and this seems to be the big rig area. Most people are tent or small camper setups. Bathrooms clean, hot water reasonable temp. Dish washing stations at each restroom. Movies at night (kids). The state park is really pretty and well maintained. The area towns are very pretty and remarkably quiet in general (not many tourist traps) and its easy to access various shoreline parks, drives, viewpoints. I'd avoid the spots very nearest the park road as it does get a lot of day visitors to the park/beach. I'm here late August and schools go back this week so midweek the campground is less than half full but I believe it will fill for the weekend.

      Gibson Hill RV Park

      Two-Night Getaway

We brought the camper for a quick two-night getaway and spent most of our time doing absolutely nothing. Cooked outside, read a little, and finally slowed down for a weekend.

      We Had Booked Another

We came up for two nights with our tent and ended up wishing we had booked another. Nothing fancy about our weekend, just cooking outside, sleeping under the trees, and enjoying some time away.

      Oak Haven Family Campground

Good basic campground for short days

We use Oakhaven as our first camping trip of the year typically it’s near a home less an hour away yet it feels like it’s much further. Well, located in a small community in southwestern Massachusetts. You can access a lot of tourist areas for day trips if you’re so inclined like Sturbridge mass or the Cobb and Reservoir area. This is a great campground for dogs nice areas to take a walk and also out into the main town area. Owners are pretty chill. There isn’t a ton of activities or special events. Just a few to keep things interesting. Camp store is well stocked.

      Nice Campground

Nice campground for a quick stop. Our site was easy to get into, everything worked like it should, and we had a peaceful night before getting back on the road.

    What to Do

Fishing in East Haddam: Devil's Hopyard State Park Campground offers excellent trout fishing opportunities nearby. One camper noted, "Go here every spring for opening day of fishing season and camp the entire weekend" while another visitor shared that "you could hike down to the river for a quick dip. The river isn't deep enough for a full swim but still was good enough on a hot day."

Hiking near waterfalls: The trails at Devil's Hopyard State Park Campground provide access to Chapman Falls, just a short walk from campsites. A reviewer mentioned, "It was great to hike and see the waterfall" while another detailed that "across the street from the campground is a trail to Chapman Falls, which will take less than 10 minutes to hike to."

Beach exploration: Rocky Neck State Park Campground features multiple beach areas within walking distance. A visitor commented, "The campgrounds are named after water fowl: Crane, Egret, Osprey, Heron etc." while another mentioned, "There's several beaches to choose from" making it easier to find less crowded spots during peak season.

    What Campers Like

Spacious campsites: Salem Farms Campground receives positive feedback for site size. A camper reported, "Fire pits are nice and big made with large rocks" and another mentioned, "Most sites are a good size" providing ample room for equipment setup.

Clean facilities: Waters Edge Family Campground maintains well-kept amenities according to multiple reviews. One visitor described it as a "nice salt water pool" while another appreciated the "nice sites and you feel totally relaxed when you stay there."

Waterfront access: Many campgrounds offer water features beyond the Connecticut River. A camper at Riverdale Farm Campsites noted, "It was a beautiful day on the beach pond" while another mentioned "the lake is perfect" for swimming and fishing opportunities. Waters Edge similarly provides "a nice lake to float on, a clean pool to swim in."

    What You Should Know

Limited campsite privacy: Several campgrounds have sites positioned close together. At Devil's Hopyard, a visitor noted, "Small campground and the sites are close together" while another shared, "The sites are very open, not wooded so you have little privacy from adjacent sites."

Seasonal operations: Most campgrounds have limited availability. Wolf's Den Family Campground operates "1st weekend May to last weekend October" requiring advance booking during summer months.

Wildlife encounters: Tick awareness is important in the region. One camper at Devil's Hopyard warned, "Be very careful with ticks, there were tons of them under our picnic table and by the campfire. Our 2 nights we found over 25 ticks." Other wildlife sightings can include beavers, with one review mentioning "a beaver family lives in the marsh so every night around 10 they would be up splashing around loudly."

    Tips for Camping with Families

Playground access: Niantic KOA offers extensive children's activities. A visitor noted, "So many activities for kids and family. Well maintained facilities" while another shared "you can ride your bike from your site to the playground, store, beach, local ice cream shop, coffee shop, or our family favorite, meig's point nature center."

Pool options: Multiple campgrounds feature swimming pools for family use. Waters Edge was described by one camper as having "a clean pool to swim in, activities every weekend" which provides alternatives when beach conditions aren't ideal.

Group camping: Salem Farms accommodates family gatherings effectively. One visitor reported, "We went tent camping with 3 other families. Loved the tent area and how close it was for the kids to use the pool and facilities. We felt safe allowing the kids to go ride bikes and go mini golfing."

    Tips from RVers

Site selection for large rigs: When camping with bigger RVs near Haddam, several campgrounds have limitations. A visitor to GrandView CampResort & Cottages noted their "level sites" are "big rig friendly" while a camper at Wolf's Den cautioned, "Really long or tall RV will need to stay close to the front of the campground, as typical older campground is not designed for 40 foot long or 10 foot high campers."

Limited hookup options: Most campgrounds offer partial hookups. At Markham Meadows, a camper shared, "Electric and water available. Dump station on the way out" which is typical for the region. Plan accordingly with appropriate tank capacities for your stay.

Off-season considerations: Spring and fall camping requires preparation. Many campgrounds reduce services outside peak season, with one Rocky Neck visitor noting the park operates from "May 26 to September 29" with varying amenities available through the operating season.
