    Mystic KOA

Awesome Sunsets at the Mystic KOA

Didn’t quite feel like camping, but it was still a lovely weekend away at the Mystic KOA. We decided to head down to check out the aquarium and stayed at a deluxe cabin. It was cute and clean and furnished with linens, cookware, utensils, kitchen essentials, keurig coffee maker/pods, and full-sized fridge. Only complaint was an odd, musty smell we couldn’t quite figure out.

The grounds are large with vast amounts of space. Be forewarned that it’s right off of 95, and the sound definitely carries. Trees are sparse in areas, but the sunsets were a nice trade off. Amenities seemed nice from what we could tell - cool outdoor movie screen, pools and playground, though we certainly didn’t get to enjoy these things in February.

    Charlie Brown Campground

    Well run Campground

WE come here every year with our group, RVing Women Northeast Network for our first rally of the season each year for a number of years,  The reason we come back is the way we are treated, because they have pavilions that have a campfires pit and the roof is made so it takes the smoke straight up out of the pavilion yet is protective of those under the roof from rain etc.  VERY enjoyable.  We all park around this Pavillon.  IT is well kept, kids are entertained by parents and fishing etc.  Parties are present but they have quiet hour and it seems to be obeyed.

    Mystic KOA

    Wasp Breeding Ground!

Pros: Helpful staff, morning garbage pickup, excellent laundry facility, plenty of activities and amenities for children. Cons: Wasps!! Wasps everywhere!! We did our best to keep them at bay by lighting some sage but they were persistent. Not much privacy back in the tent/cabin areas, camp sites very close together and people have the ability to stare right into your site.

    Indian Island County Park

    Great location, beautiful views

Wonderful weekend visit in the off season. Site was level, pretty spacious and easy to back into. Campsites are located close enough to the beach/marsh. Multiple playgrounds for the kids although they were closed due to Covid. No sewers sites that I could tell, and water was off because we were a week shy of the season opening. Needed to move to dump station prior to leaving (2 night visit) and had to drive to fill the fresh water tank once while there. Nice neighbors. Dog friendly. People obeyed the quiet hours. I have not one complaint. There were hiking trails and geocaching on site. 4 stars bc no sewer at the campsite and we like full hook ups and honestly I’m guessing this is a county rule but the playgrounds could’ve been open. Outside and socially distanced after dealing with Covid for a whole year and most local parks and playgrounds being open since last May... that was upsetting. All in all we had a great weekend. Close to the LI aquarium as well! Many stores and a golf course near by too!

    Wilderness Lake Park

    Cute place

My family and I stayed here a few years ago in the tent area. Not all sites are secluded, but we were the only ones so it was nice and private. At the time there was only one port-a-potty for the tent area we were in and no water source. It’s a dog friendly park which was good for us, our dog could swim in the lake with us. Cute patio overlooking the lake as well with seating. Wood delivery is awesome especially since tent area is a slight distance from office, but that is also a bonus so you’re away from the RV sites. Also price is reasonable for a private campground considering the rates a lot of other places charge.

    great experience

every campsite has its own fire pit with a grill attachment and a picnic table. my site was tent only and you couldn’t pull your car up to the site so unloading and loading was a hassle. beach is a short drive on site and the showers were one site over. I had a great time

    Highland Campground

    Older but lots to do

The campground is older, and the roads/driveways need work. For those looking for newer facilities, this isn't the place. There are no 50 amp sites. The rec hall and the bath houses are old, but we don't mind the old fashioned spots at times. Reminds me of camping as a kid. There are a lot of activities for the kids and adults. Shuffleboard, bocci ball, fishing, bingo, playground, pit luck dinners, etc. There is wifi available.

There are a lot of seasonal campers which can sometimes feel like you're intruding on their space. There is a page of rules to follow, the seasonals ignore them.

There is no black water hookup, only gray water. You have to have them clean out the black or dump on the way out.

    Odetah Camping Resort

Had no idea it was there!

Stayed in October 2018. Tucked away in the woods I never knew this was there! Beautiful pond and a good mix of seasonal and overnight sites as well as cabins. Plenty of areas to walk our dogs and have them swim. Playgrounds, bath houses throughout and fully stocked camp store with anything you could ever need. Organized events, cafe on site and quick drive (or Uber ride) to Mohegan Sun.

Guide to Haddam

Connecticut's camping options near Haddam encompass diverse ecosystems within a 40-mile radius. The area features deciduous forests transitioning between coastal and inland terrain, with elevations ranging from sea level to approximately 400 feet. Spring camping season typically begins in early May with overnight temperatures in the 40s-50s°F, while summer brings humid conditions with daytime temperatures averaging 80-85°F through late October.

What to Do

Hiking to beach access: Rocky Neck State Park Campground offers trails that connect directly to shoreline areas. "The campsite is only a short walk from the beach and available mountain bike and hiking trails. A great family campsite with easy to get to activities," notes Mauricio R.

Swimming options: Riverdale Farm Campsites features both a swimming pond and river access. According to Nick H., "The lake is perfect, the river needs work. But this is an awesome small campground. The kids who work here are so friendly and the playground is nice."

Amusement park adventures: Lake Compounce Campground provides direct access to an adjacent theme park. "This is attached to an amusement park but far enough away not to be a bother," explains Diane R., who appreciated the balance between convenience and quiet.

Free beach shuttles: Niantic KOA offers transportation services that expand your beach options. "They will give free shuttle rides to 3 beaches & downtown Niantic, CT," shares one visitor who found this service particularly valuable.

What Campers Like

Large wooded sites: Wolf's Den Family Campground offers spacious camping areas. Jacob S. notes, "Love the camp ground super kind staff and great room on camp sites," highlighting the generous spacing that many campgrounds in the region lack.

Clean facilities: Campers consistently mention bathroom cleanliness as a priority. At Lake Compounce, a visitor reported, "Restrooms are clean and spacious. Showers are great. Whoever planned this campground is/was a camper."

Easy beach access: Rocky Neck State Park Campground receives praise for its proximity to shoreline. "Beautiful campground right near the beach. Hiking trails along the coast line," says Timothy R., emphasizing the natural connection between camping and water activities.

On-site recreation: Multiple campgrounds feature extensive amenities. "They have a playground, game room, 'adult' lounge, a laundry, a swimming pond, and river access for fishing and swimming," a visitor at Riverdale Farm notes.

What You Should Know

Seasonal limitations: Most campgrounds in the Haddam area operate from early May to late October, with limited year-round options. "We stayed in cooler September during Covid, so we couldn't take advantage of all the amenities, but we've already decided we need to book a trip for peak season next summer," shared a Dana C. about Odetah Camping Resort.

Varying site privacy: Site separation differs significantly between campgrounds. "The sites are a little close, but with so much to do you don't spend that much time at your site," notes a visitor at Odetah, reflecting a common trade-off at resort-style campgrounds.

Highway noise considerations: Some campgrounds have ambient interstate sounds. A reviewer at Mystic KOA mentioned, "You can hear the highway very well at night, particularly in the safari field," suggesting selecting sites further from major roads.

Weekend crowds: Burlingame State Park experiences significant population increases on weekends. "Do not come on a holiday weekend, it's packed," advises Jessica A., recommending midweek stays for a quieter experience.

Tips for Camping with Families

Playground accessibility: Strawberry Park offers multiple play areas throughout the property. "The kids ride their bikes to the sports fields, the rec center for the pool and activities. Oh and my young children LOVE the air pillow, they have spent hours on there," shares Ryan C.

Evening entertainment: Many campgrounds schedule night activities. "We did bingo and it was a blast. It was a beautiful day on the beach pond. They had great prizes for cheap cost. I spent 2 dollars for 10 long rounds of bingo with 4 cards," reports a Riverdale Farm camper.

Organized activities: Structured programming keeps children engaged. "They always have a smile and they change the schedule when it rains to rainy day activities," notes a Strawberry Park visitor, appreciating the staff adaptability to weather conditions.

Water features: Multiple swimming options matter for families. "The splash area at the pool is great for little kids," mentions a visitor at Odetah, highlighting the importance of age-appropriate water activities.

Tips from RVers

Site leveling: Niantic KOA offers varied terrain. "Sites are large enough for RV. NO privacy, but tent sites were ok," notes Ruth K., suggesting requesting specific areas based on your equipment.

Hookup considerations: Full-service sites are limited at some locations. "Nice campground in the woods near hadlyme," mentions James K. about Wolf's Den, though noting visitors should check specific hookup availability when booking.

Access roads: Some campgrounds have challenging entry points. Joel R. observed at Riverdale Farm, "The road into the campground is narrow and winding, so larger RV mss as y have trouble, but there were several of them there when we were there."

Dump station logistics: Plan for limited sewer connections. "Very peaceful. There are a few dumpstations around in the camp," notes a Wolf's Den visitor, suggesting planning your stay accordingly if full hookups are important.
