Turquoise Lake

The most desirable campgrounds at Turquoise Lake are May Queen, Belle of Colorado, and Molly Brown campgrounds. Each offers beautiful views and access to the stunning lake. Tabor campground is generally considered the least desirable option at Turquoise Lake. For those seeking more seclusion, the dispersed camping areas where Road 4 and Road 5 intersect provide excellent opportunities, with sites along the boundary line offering significant privacy (some with neighbors over 500 yards away) and fantastic scenery in a quieter setting.

Turquoise Lake is approximately 100 miles southwest of Denver, with a driving time of about 2 to 2.5 hours depending on traffic and weather conditions. The route typically takes you along I-70 west and then south on Highway 24 toward Leadville. The lake is located just west of Leadville in the San Isabel National Forest. During winter months, be prepared for mountain driving conditions and potential road closures or delays.

Reservations for Turquoise Lake's developed campgrounds (May Queen, Belle of Colorado, Molly Brown, and Tabor) can be made through Recreation.gov. It's advisable to book well in advance, especially for summer weekends and holidays when the campgrounds fill quickly. For the dispersed camping areas near Roads 4 and 5, no reservations are needed as these operate on a first-come, first-served basis. Turquoise Lake's developed campgrounds have limited or no hookups for RVs. While RVs are welcome at most of the campgrounds, you should be prepared for dry camping. Some sites may accommodate larger rigs, but there are typically no electric, water, or sewer connections at individual sites. The dispersed camping areas off Roads 4 and 5 are more suitable for smaller rigs or tent camping. Check with the managing agency for specific site dimensions if you have a larger RV.

Turquoise Lake sits at approximately 10,000 feet elevation in the Rocky Mountains near Leadville. This high-altitude location offers stunning mountain views but requires acclimation for those coming from lower elevations.
