Mike Higbee State Wildlife Area

Mike Higbee State Wildlife Area provides primitive camping access within a 4,000-acre wildlife management area managed by Colorado Parks & Wildlife. The campground accommodates drive-in access along dirt roads that can become challenging during wet conditions.

Located in southeastern Colorado's shortgrass prairie, the area serves hunters and wildlife watchers targeting waterfowl, upland birds, and deer. Campers should prepare for minimal facilities and pack water, as amenities are limited. The site works well as a base for exploring places to camp around Lamar or accessing nearby agricultural communities. Spring and fall offer the most comfortable camping temperatures in this high plains environment.

Just OK

First off, I'm non-resident and you need a state wildlife area permit. There is no such thing. You just need some sort of permit. I got a 5-day fishing license. A 1-day is about $10. The lot is next to the highway so there is noise. There is a shotgun shooting range nearby and empty shells around where i camped. OK for a place to overnight.

Marked overnight camping lot & great birding

I was initially skeptical that camping would be allowed since this is a state wildlife area, but on entry there is an "Overnight Camping" sign with an arrow pointing to a lot with fresh gravel. I backed up to the marsh and set up my truck tent, with the one issue noted being the occasional trains and highway 50 traffic. There is some buffer against the noise, but it is definitely audible. Woke to vigorous bird activity including Bell's Vireos, and some locals fishing.
