Tons of places for tents and RVs in a beautiful forest

I recommend the camping away from the main road going up to the mountains because it gets pretty dusty with the off-road vehicles, but there are numerous places to camp with shade or in the sun and one or two next to the creek. It's very quiet and safe and full of families. However, this is completely dispersed camping with no facilities whatsoever.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is Ironton dispersed camping located in Colorado?

Ironton dispersed camping is located in the San Juan National Forest in southwestern Colorado. The area is situated near the historic Ironton mining district, south of Ouray along the Million Dollar Highway (US-550). This dispersed camping area is nestled in the scenic San Juan Mountains, offering access to numerous hiking trails, off-road vehicle routes, and beautiful mountain views. The camping spots are spread throughout Ironton Park, with some sites positioned away from the main road leading into the mountains.

Are there any facilities or amenities available at Ironton dispersed camping areas?

Ironton dispersed camping offers minimal facilities as it's a true dispersed camping experience. There are no developed amenities such as restrooms, potable water, trash service, or electrical hookups. Campers should be prepared to be fully self-sufficient, bringing their own water and packing out all trash. Some camping spots are positioned near a creek, providing natural water access (though this water should be filtered or treated before use). The area does offer variety in camping locations with options for shade or sun exposure depending on your preference.

What are the dispersed camping rules and regulations for Ironton Park?

When dispersed camping at Ironton Park, standard San Juan National Forest regulations apply. Camping is limited to 14 days within a 30-day period. Practice Leave No Trace principles by camping at least 100 feet from water sources and using existing fire rings when having campfires (if not under fire restrictions). All trash must be packed out. For the best experience, camp away from the main road to avoid dust from passing off-road vehicles. Camping spots near the creek are limited, so arrive early if you want these prime locations. The area is family-friendly but does see off-road vehicle traffic. Always check with the local Forest Service office for current regulations before your trip.

What's the difference between Ironton Park Campground and dispersed camping options?

Ironton Park's dispersed camping offers a more primitive, undeveloped experience compared to established campgrounds. While formal campgrounds typically have designated sites, picnic tables, fire rings, restrooms, and sometimes water, the dispersed options in Ironton Park have none of these amenities. Dispersed camping allows you to choose from numerous informal sites scattered throughout the area, offering more solitude and flexibility. The dispersed sites are free of charge, whereas formal campgrounds often have fees. Some dispersed spots in Ironton are located along the creek or nestled among trees, providing natural settings away from developed facilities.
