Description
Open BLM high-desert terrain above 11,000 feet in the San Juan Mountains along the Alpine Loop sits at the confluence of the Animas River and a dramatic glacial valley, shoulder-to-shoulder with the weathered Victorian-era ruins of Animas Forks ghost town. The setting is genuinely alpine — expect cold nights and gusty afternoons even in midsummer, with sweeping views of Cinnamon Mountain and the surrounding peaks. Access via California Gulch Road (CR 19) is rough, rocky four-wheel-drive terrain with high-clearance required; RVs and low-clearance vehicles should not attempt the approach. Fire rings are present on-site.
