Free dispersed camping at Harvey Gap comes with a significant access caveat: the dirt roads leading to elevated sites above Grass Valley Reservoir require high clearance and, in most conditions, four-wheel drive. The lower "parking lot" area near the entrance is accessible to standard passenger vehicles and has hosted campers who prefer to skip the climb entirely, but the upper spots demand more from both driver and rig. Rigs up to 45 feet are technically listed as welcome, though the steep, narrow roads and uneven terrain make that figure worth questioning before you commit. Bring plenty of leveling blocks. The sites are slopey.
The upper sites sit above the reservoir with open sightlines toward the water and surrounding hills. Kassidy T. describes the vantage as a "super fun view of the lake," and multiple reviewers confirm that even the lower spots offer views of paddleboarders and anglers on the water below. Fishing, kayaking, and swimming are all available at Harvey Gap State Park across the road. The area also has OHV and biking access.
Wet weather changes the character of this spot considerably. Reviewers who visited in spring report that the clay-heavy dirt roads become slick and difficult to descend, even in four-wheel drive. One camper crawled down in 4-Low after a rainstorm. Campfires are permitted and an established fire ring is present at at least one site. Pets are allowed. Road noise and nearby construction have been noted as occasional disruptions. Campers considering similar free BLM dispersed options in the region might also look at Hubbard Mesa OHV East - BLM or BLM 8102 Dispersed above Rifle Creek for comparison. Harvey Gap works best for self-sufficient campers with capable vehicles who want reservoir access without a campground fee.
