Beautiful lake, windy

Hit this one on an overnight backpacking trip and boy was this just paradise. Awesome little trip with never ending amazing views. Definitely a little windy at the top and the hike back wasn’t my favorite but wouldn’t recommend it enough. Snow at top… be prepared.

Frequently Asked Questions

What permits or regulations are required for camping at Gilpin Lake?

Camping at Gilpin Lake requires a self-issued wilderness permit, which is available at the trailhead. No reservations are needed, but you must follow Leave No Trace principles. Campfires may be restricted depending on seasonal conditions and fire danger levels. Camp at least 100 feet from the lake and trails, and store food properly to prevent wildlife encounters. Group size is typically limited to 12 people maximum in wilderness areas. For the most current regulations, check with the Routt National Forest office before your trip.

When is the best time of year to camp at Gilpin Lake?

The prime camping season at Gilpin Lake is mid-July through early September when the trail is typically free of snow and alpine wildflowers are in bloom. June and early July often still have significant snowpack at higher elevations, making access challenging. The area becomes quite windy at the top, so prepare accordingly even during summer months. By late September, temperatures drop significantly and early snow is possible. Weather can change rapidly year-round, so always bring appropriate gear regardless of when you visit.

What activities can you do while camping at Gilpin Lake?

Gilpin Lake offers excellent backcountry activities including fishing, swimming (though the water remains quite cold year-round), photography, and wildlife viewing. The surrounding area provides opportunities for additional hiking and exploring adjacent alpine lakes. Stargazing is exceptional due to the remote location and high elevation. The panoramic mountain views make this a paradise for landscape photography. Be prepared for rapidly changing weather conditions that can affect outdoor activities.

Where is Gilpin Lake camping located in Colorado?

Gilpin Lake is located in the Mount Zirkel Wilderness area within Routt National Forest in northern Colorado. The lake sits at high elevation in the Rocky Mountains and is accessible via a moderately challenging hiking trail. The trail to Gilpin Lake begins at the Slavonia Trailhead, located north of Steamboat Springs. The picturesque alpine lake is surrounded by dramatic mountain scenery, making it a popular destination for backcountry campers seeking pristine wilderness experiences.
