Picket Wire Corrals

Picketwire Canyon is located near La Junta, Colorado. The main access point is the trailhead area, where dispersed camping is widely available. To reach the camping areas, follow the road toward Withers Canyon. Note that road conditions can be challenging after rain, sometimes resulting in closures. The area surrounding the trailhead offers numerous camping spots, giving visitors plenty of options to set up camp. For the most reliable access information, check with the local Forest Service office before your trip.

Picketwire Canyon offers basic, primitive camping facilities. There's a vault toilet near the cattle corrals area. The camping is entirely dispersed, with no designated sites, tables, or water sources. Campers can have campfires when fire danger is low. The main camping areas are around the trailhead and at Withers Canyon campground, which is approximately six miles further along the road. Be prepared for self-sufficient camping by bringing all necessary supplies, including water.

Hiking is the premier activity at Picketwire Canyonlands, with the dinosaur tracks being the main attraction. The hiking trail is relatively easy and very scenic, typically taking about 6 hours round-trip. Visitors can explore the canyon's natural beauty, observe wildlife, and experience the unique geological features. The area offers excellent opportunities for photography, nature observation, and stargazing due to minimal light pollution. Watch out for the abundant cactus plants while exploring. For the most rewarding experience, start your hike early in the morning to avoid afternoon heat, especially during summer months.
