The wide graded gravel road features dust abatement treatment, eliminating washboard conditions while accommodating oil and gas truck traffic during weekdays.

Campers can access multiple sites near ancient rock art locations, including Shield site at mile marker 5.6, Fremont Ridge at 9.7, and Carrot Men at 11.6. Many dispersed spots offer expansive views from elevated positions. Cell service remains strong when the Big Ridge tower array is visible to the east. The area maintains quiet conditions on weeknights, though weekend OHV activity increases noise levels. Side roads often dead-end at industrial pads within half a mile, requiring advance scouting for suitable camping spots.

Beautiful 360 Mountain Views

So thankful to have found this site! I found a completely isolated mountain top area with no one around. The views were amazing and the sunset was gorgeous! Clean, quiet and peaceful. The road going in and out is a bit bumpy/rocky though and some narrow edges with no guardrail (if you care about that)

Stunning 360 View

Found a site with a stunning 360 degree view. Clean, no trace of anyone else for miles. It was windy at times but very comfortable temperature compared to the surrounding valleys.

BLM rock art sites dispersed

The BLM Dragon Trail rock art sites are along County Road #23 south out of Rangely Colo. No designated sites and most are best for overlander types. Camping opportunities start at the County road #100 access to the Shield site and then go south along County Road #23. Camping is possible at Shield site mp 5.6, Fremont Ridge site mp 9.7, Crooks Brand site mp 10.1 and Carrot Men site mp 11.6. Additional camping possibles to south to end of County road #23. Note that many side roads are deadend in .5+ miles to oil and gas pads so recon first. County Road #23 is a wide graded gravel road with dust abatement so no washboard and no dust. Look out for oil and gas trucks zipping up and down the road. At night area is very quiet but all bets are off on weekends as this area is also a designated OHV area. Cell signal is very good if you can see cell tower array on Big Ridge to east.
