Yellow post number 2

Yellow Post #2 – San Bernardino National Forest Secluded, free, first-come-first-served tent site tucked deep in the forest near Hemet, CA. No amenities—no toilet, water, or trash—so pack in and out. Fire ring and picnic table on-site. Shaded by mature trees with a dirt/sand/rock surface. Site fits up to 8 people and 2 vehicles.

Access road is rough and rocky but doable in dry conditions with a careful 2WD. Signage is limited—offline maps recommended. Site sits near a dry creek bed and has a short walk to a west-facing boulder with expansive views of the valley.

Wildlife includes deer, lizards, snakes, woodpeckers, and lots of squirrels. Mosquitoes come out at dusk—repellent is a must. Fire bans usually in effect during summer. Great for quiet retreats, hiking, light climbing, and off-grid solitude.

A rugged but rewarding forest stay for self-sufficient campers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where are the South Ridge Yellow Post Sites located near Idyllwild?

South Ridge Yellow Post Sites are located in the San Bernardino National Forest near Idyllwild and Hemet, California. These secluded sites are tucked deep in the forest at a higher elevation, providing cooler temperatures (typically mid-80s even during warm seasons) and a private camping experience. The sites are surrounded by mature trees, offering natural shade and a true forest setting. The higher elevation location makes these sites particularly appealing during summer months when lower elevations can be uncomfortably hot.

What are the rules and regulations for Yellow Post camping near Idyllwild?

Yellow Post camping at South Ridge follows standard dispersed camping regulations: sites are first-come, first-served with no reservations accepted. Campers must pack in all supplies and pack out all trash as there are no amenities or services. Fires are only permitted within the provided fire rings, and fire restrictions may apply during dry seasons. Camping is limited to the designated yellow post sites - no creating new campsites. All food must be properly stored to prevent wildlife encounters. Mosquito repellent is highly recommended. The lack of facilities means campers must be self-sufficient and practice Leave No Trace principles, bringing their own water and managing waste appropriately.

Is camping at South Ridge Yellow Post Sites free?

Yes, camping at South Ridge Yellow Post Sites is free. These sites operate on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservation system or camping fees required. This makes them an excellent budget-friendly option for camping in the Idyllwild area. However, the trade-off for free camping is the lack of amenities, so campers should come prepared with all necessary supplies.

What dispersed camping options are available near South Ridge in Idyllwild?

The South Ridge Yellow Post Sites themselves are the primary dispersed camping option in this area. These numbered yellow post sites (like Yellow Post #2) provide secluded camping opportunities in the forest. Each site features a fire ring and picnic table on dirt/sand/rock surfaces. The sites are well-spaced, offering privacy that's rare for Southern California camping. Remember that as dispersed sites, they have no amenities like toilets or water sources. Always check with the San Bernardino National Forest office for current conditions and any temporary closures before planning your trip.
