H. Dana Bowers Rest Area

Sitting at the south end of the Golden Gate Bridge, H. Dana Bowers Rest Area functions as an overnight parking stop rather than a traditional campground. No tent sites or camp setup is possible here. Daytime foot traffic from tourists is heavy, but vehicle density drops considerably after dark. Amenities include drinking water, restrooms, and trash service, with ADA access and cell service confirmed. Security is present on-site. The spot works best for travelers in passenger vehicles or big rigs who need a safe, no-cost overnight stop with direct access to campgrounds just outside Sausalito or the bridge walk. For a more traditional camping experience nearby, Kirby Cove Campground sits less than a mile northwest.

Great overnight spot with a view - but not very private

I have parked here in a normal passenger vehicle multiple times and spent the night. There are always other cars (fewer at night) but quite a few available spots. I believe there were larger spots as well. There is security at the site and no signs (at least that I could see) prohibiting over night parking. We parked with a beautiful view of the Golden Gate Bridge and went on a walk across it. It was not very private as tourists came by to take photos and there were tons of cars but we didn’t mind. There is no room to set up camp but if fine if you come in late and leave early. There is a lot of space to walk around, enjoy the view, eat an easy meal outside, and use the restroom. I believe there was cell service. I felt safe due to it being public and there being security. I prefer this to a random street in the city.
