Cuddeback Road Dispersed Camping

SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Flat, open desert and a washboard mile off the highway set the tone at Cuddeback Road Dispersed Camping, a BLM site on the high desert floor near places to camp near Red Mountain. The access road is manageable for large rigs. One camper successfully brought a 43-foot fifth wheel out without issue, and a 21-foot travel trailer posed no difficulty either, so big vehicles have a reasonable shot here.

The camping area itself is wide and flat, with open sightlines across the surrounding desert and off-road vehicle trails branching out in multiple directions. Highway 395 is visible and audible from camp, so expect some road noise. Temperatures swing hard in this desert environment, dropping into the mid-30s on winter nights even after warm days. Summer heat, on the other hand, can cut stays short.

The site has a litter problem worth knowing about before you go. Jules D. puts it plainly: "Toilet paper islands with poop mountains are not conducive to enjoying the land." Illegal black tank dumping has been reported by multiple visitors. Pack out everything, and come prepared with your own waste management. No hookups or facilities are available on site. Nearby, Cuddeback Road BLM Dispersed (US 395) sits just to the west and is worth checking as an alternative if this area is occupied or conditions have worsened. Campers who go in with eyes open and respect for the land will find a wide, uncrowded place to spend a night under the Mojave sky.

Easy access, lots of trash

Easy access on a washboard road for about a mile. 395 can be seen and heard. Pro- we had the place to ourselves. Very flat and easy. Very little traffic driving past- mostly a couple of work trucks daily. Con- so much trash! To include multiple spots where people had dumped their black tanks! 🙀 Please don’t do that. Toilet paper islands with poop mountains are not conducive to enjoying the land.

We would have stayed more than three nights if not for the heat.

Easy access flat RV spot

We dragged our new 43ft fifth wheel out here for a first test run. Was an easy access road, no problems finding and there was a large, flat, dirt parking lot to camp with nice sunrise views. Was a beautiful day but it’s a desert so the temperature plummets when the sun goes down. It got down to 34 degrees at night.

There are off road vehicle trails all around.
