Nice Lake - Campground is very "buggy."

Was here in the summer.  The lake (PGE) seemed to be well used by boaters and fishermen/women.  The campground is small, nestled in the trees above the lake.  Looked pretty and the sites were well spaced. However, I was in a tent and there were  "lots" of bugs. Was so bad I really only wanted to be in my tent, did not want to be out and about or even hang out in the campsite.  I am thinking that my expereince would be better in the fall or spring.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is dispersed camping allowed at Lake Spaulding?

Dispersed camping is not typically allowed in the immediate Lake Spaulding area. The campground itself consists of designated sites above the lake. As PG&E manages this land for hydroelectric operations, they generally restrict camping to designated areas for safety and environmental protection reasons. If you're seeking dispersed camping options, you'll likely need to look to nearby National Forest lands outside the PG&E project boundary. Always check current regulations with both PG&E and the local Forest Service office before attempting any dispersed camping in the broader region.

Where is Lake Spaulding Campground located and how do I get there?

Lake Spaulding Campground is located in the Donner Summit area of the Sierra Nevada mountains in California. The campground sits nestled in the trees above Lake Spaulding, a PG&E managed reservoir. To reach the campground, you'll need to take forest roads that lead to the lake area. The site is positioned to provide convenient access to the lake, which is popular for boating and fishing activities. As mountain roads can be variable, a vehicle with decent clearance is recommended. For specific driving directions, contact the PG&E recreation office or check a forest service map before your trip.

Is Lake Spaulding Campground managed by PG&E and what does this mean for campers?

Yes, Lake Spaulding Campground is managed by PG&E (Pacific Gas and Electric Company) as part of their hydroelectric project lands. This management arrangement means the lake and surrounding recreation areas are maintained as part of PG&E's license requirements with federal regulators. For campers, this typically translates to modest facilities focused on providing access to the reservoir. PG&E maintains the area primarily for recreation access to the lake, which sees considerable use by boaters and anglers. The company may have specific regulations regarding camping periods, reservation systems, or usage fees. Contact PG&E's recreation department for the most current information on regulations and availability.

What amenities and facilities are available at Lake Spaulding Campground?

Lake Spaulding Campground offers basic facilities in a natural setting. The campground features well-spaced sites nestled among trees, providing good privacy between campers. While specific amenities are limited, the campground's main attraction is its proximity to Lake Spaulding, which supports fishing and boating activities. The campground has a rustic feel, maintaining the natural forest environment. Tent campers should be prepared for insects during summer months. For the most current information on available facilities, it's advisable to check with PG&E's recreation department before your visit.
