Hidden Gem

Wake up with the Little Truckee River a stones throw from your window. Bear boxes because we are in bear country.

Ample space, lots to explore in the area.

Nice river access but exposed

  • the river is right there, most sites have direct access
  • very clean vault toilet, I think all sites have bear boxes
  • super exposed, very little to no shade Getting the right site is important, most of the sites on the river are right up next to each other. Still, it is a nice location and sleeping with the sounds of the river is pretty sweet.

Small but nice, easy access and next to the river.

Camped one night here during the week and only had one other group there. One of those campgrounds where getting the right spot can make a big difference. I got #8 and I recommend it - it is the one in the corner closest to the river, so you have some privacy and easy river access.

Some of the other sites are pretty cramped and I could see this campground being a bit claustrophobic if it was full, hence the four stars. But that said, for what it is, I appreciated it. Super easy access too, and only about 15 minutes from Truckee.

No cell reception on Verizon.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the history of Boyington Mill and how did the campground get its name?

The Boyington Mill Campground takes its name from a historic mill that once operated in the area along the Little Truckee River. While specific details about the original mill's operations aren't widely documented, the name preserves this piece of local history. The area's logging and milling history was significant to regional development, with water-powered mills common throughout the Sierra Nevada during settlement periods. Today, campers can enjoy the natural beauty of the river setting that once powered the mill's operations, creating a connection to the area's industrial past while enjoying modern outdoor recreation.

What facilities and amenities are available at Boyington Mill Campground?

Boyington Mill Campground offers back-in RV sites of varying lengths, vault toilets that are kept clean, and bear boxes at all sites for food storage since it's located in bear country. The campground was redesigned at the end of the 2020 season to better accommodate different RV sizes. Most campsites have direct access to the Little Truckee River, though the sites are generally exposed with minimal shade. The campground layout places importance on site selection, as some spots offer more privacy than others, particularly those in corner locations near the river.

Are there photos available of Boyington Mill Campground?
