Offroad trail to hidden campsite!

Alder Creek campsite is 8 miles offroad from Hwy 1 in the Big Sur area. 4x4 is definitely recommended. There are a few spots a few miles from the highway where you can setup camp, but Alder camp is quite far down the road. There were only a few campsites that we could pull our cars into because the road leading to more had some trees down. Anyone who wants to go exploring this is your place! Great views all the way up

Private & Quiet

We camped at a primitive spot off the road on the way to the main camp. It was very quiet. Do watch for the cow patties!

Would not recommend for a trailer as theres not a lot of room for oncoming cars to negotiate, and i could see towing be an extra issue if the roads are wet.

Siteturn out about half way down hill

This was a good place to camp at one time

Alder creek was a yearly place we visited, camped and fished but that was 5 years ago, loggers came in and destroyed the camp ground, the toilets are unsafe. The entire place is a fire hazard, such a shame. The forest service has really let us down. Sorry

Hiking opportunities abound in the surrounding Los Padres National Forest with various trails accessible from or near the campground. Wildlife viewing is excellent in this remote setting. For those willing to drive back to Highway 1, the spectacular Big Sur coastline with its beaches, vista points, and additional hiking trails is accessible for day trips.

Where is Alder Creek Campground located in Big Sur?

Alder Creek Camp is located approximately 8 miles off Highway 1 in the Big Sur area of California. The remote setting places you deep within the forested area of Big Sur, away from the coastal views but offering a more secluded camping experience. Four-wheel drive vehicles are highly recommended for accessing this campground due to the road conditions.

Do I need a reservation for Alder Creek Campground?

Alder Creek Camp typically operates on a first-come, first-served basis without a formal reservation system. Due to its remote location and the challenging access road, the campground doesn't generally fill up quickly. However, it's always wise to have a backup plan, especially during peak seasons. For the most current information regarding any permit requirements or seasonal closures, contact the Los Padres National Forest office before your trip.
