Wind is the first thing many campers notice at Schnebly Hill Road, a dispersed camping area within Coconino National Forest where gusts of 15 to 30 mph are common enough that reviewers recommend bringing extra rope and stakes to secure gear. The site sits above Sedona, with open sightlines toward the surrounding buttes and valley below. No facilities exist here. Campers bring everything in and pack everything out.
Road access is the defining logistical factor. The approach from Highway 17 is manageable for most vehicles with some off-road experience, but the climb directly from Sedona is a different matter. As Ben W. noted, that route is "not a road" and pushed a 2025 Subaru Outback Wilderness to its limits. Reviewers consistently recommend 4x4 and meaningful ground clearance for anyone coming up from town. The road has reportedly been left unmaintained to accommodate paid ORV tours, which also means vehicle traffic continues through the evening hours.
Scorpions have been spotted at the site. Zipping tents closed at all times is a practical precaution worth taking seriously. Cell service is listed as available, and pets are permitted. The area draws enough visitors that true solitude is unlikely, particularly on weekends. Campers who want a managed site with more infrastructure might consider Schnebly Hill Rd, Fox Borough Dam a couple of miles to the northeast, or browse primitive camping near Coconino National Forest for other dispersed options in the region.
