Mather Campground

Just inside Grand Canyon National Park's South Entrance, Mather Campground sits within walking distance of the canyon rim. The campground provides both drive-in and walk-in sites, with water hookups available for RVs alongside standard tent camping areas.

Sites cluster fairly close together across the campground's layout, though the flat terrain makes setup straightforward. Restrooms and drinking water stations distribute throughout the grounds, with a dump station serving RV campers. Staff at the entrance can provide trail maps and information about exploring the canyon. The campground operates a coin-operated laundry and shower facility at $2.50 for five-minute sessions.

Park shuttles stop directly at the campground, connecting campers to viewpoints and trailheads throughout the South Rim area. "No problems at night, flat surface, toilets and drinking water nearby," notes Luis P. about the practical setup. Weather shifts quickly at this elevation, with conditions changing from sunny to snowy within hours. Campground rules face strict enforcement.

Rates run $18-30 per night plus park entrance fees. Reservations help secure spots during peak seasons, though some availability exists for walk-ins. The campground works well for visitors planning multi-day canyon exploration or those needing full amenities close to major viewpoints.

Beautiful and peaceful campground

This campground is amazing! So beautiful and peaceful amongst the fragrant ponderosa pines and juniper. The rangers are super nice and helpful. Bathrooms are clean (haven’t tried the showers yet). So quiet in the off season. We brought our e-bikes and rode out to Hermits Rest and then to the South Kaibab trailhead. Great riding with beautiful views. Love this special place!!

It’s the Grand Canyon guys!

This was my first trip to the Grand Canyon. The campground is a short hike from the rim. The sites can be close together but it’s a beautiful area nonetheless. The weather can be very unpredictable. It went from sunny and hot to snowing. Be sure to follow the campground rules. They are strictly enforced.

It was great!

I arrived after sunset and office was closed, but there were some tags to tear, indicating instructions about available places. No problems at night, flat surface, toilets and drinking water nearby... just a great experience for a Costa Rican tourist learning about camping and traveling around USA. The day after I just decided to stay another night, paid $18 per day without any issue. February 15, 2025.

Easy access, nice facilities

Although the sites are a bit close to one another, it's a nice area and $30/night quite reasonable (plus park entrance fee). Just inside the South entrance to Grand Canyon National. Staff super helpful with information for exploring the canyon (don't forget to ask for a trail map, if they don't offer one first). Laundry & shower are quarters only, so stock up ($2.50/5min shower).
